This is a serious question. My friend is permanently paralyzed because she flipped her fourwheeler (I did the SAME thing within a year of her but jumped off) and I am wondering if those neck guards for motorcycle riders can actually can save you from that (getting paralyzed) or is just to make you FEEL safer. I know it sounds funny and would look funny to wear riding a scooter and I've already been laughed at for talking about it w/ someone but im actually serious. i would want to wear one if im going a long way, not daily or anything.

They are used by racers and off roaders. You see them worn in motocross a lot. Neck injuries aren't too common in street riders but if you want to wear one, go ahead. One can not be too safe.

Having used one while racing, I found it to help with fatigue of the different muscles that take a pounding during a race. Since it does limit head movement, I see no advantage for their use outside of sporting. They do help guard against a whiplash type of injury but nothing is 100%.
Keep in mind they are only an aid and you can still sustain serious injury while using them.
There is no way to answer as to whether or not it would have prevented your friend's misfortune unless you were trained in accident reconstruction and understood both the mechanics and physics of an accident.

i totally didnt think about it restricting my all around ability to have quick reflexes of the head when looking for trouble on the road. im really bad about overlooking the obvious and thinking too hard, lol. like the time my killswitch was off and i racked my brains about what could be wrong.
ive been reading a lot of heated opinions elsewhere about helmets not differing in protection and not doing any good, esp at high or sudden impact. i have to disagree, and you can get tramatic brain injury or brain clot from a bruise at relatively low speed if hit right, and say you control your own odds and it just makes sense that a helmet would damper the impact to the head and give you a chance. also, the opinion some ppl have is why take the risk of riding a bike/scooter in the first place if you're scared enough to worry about the protectiveness of your helmet? well, its a risk but why not try to reduce the risk even if its not 100% or whatever?
I totally do however agree that people should have the freedom to wear what they want, though, and there's no strict helmet laws here...just says "approved protective head gear" and there's no "list" of whats approved and they "recommend" dot helmets...i think ill get an ece helmet. i dont think dot is a very good rating system, but maybe im wrong in my thinking. you kind of get jarred around and go everywhere in a atv or bike crash at least i did in the few ive had so i guess if i found a helmet with a built-in "guard" sticking down the back wouldnt be of any use either.
what do you guys think, just curious, do you think since scooters are used in areas generally 45mph or less a helmet that is of good quality is worth it? right now all i have are one of those "skull cap" type helmets but am definitely getting a well-built full face regardless and gear to cover my body---known of two people in scooter crashes just riding round the 'hood that got sandpapered to hell and back.

The way I see it is no matter how fast you go, if your not in a cage/car then the only thing protecting you from an impact is what your currently wearing. Alot of people I know go by the A.T.G.A.T.T rule and thats all the gear all the time.

I advocate the wearing of a helmet. I don't go around telling other ppl they MUST wear one. No gear is 100% protection unless you live in a bubble. The only thing protective gear does is help to increase survivability and minimize damage or loss. Nowhere does it say it will stop any and all injuries, which happens to be a misunderstood concept. Sometimes you can do everything right and still not survive. I have seen accident where the rider wore protective equipment and had it actually save their life. Had they not worn it, their chance of survival was greatly diminished. There has also been reports that a poorly designed helmet exacerbated the injuries received.
There are no guarantees in life.
