Some will let you park on the sidewalk providing its away from the doorway and not blocking an outside display and may also be in store employee view , but not a fail safe security plan . I use a sidewalk when I will be right out and look for something to wrap a cable around .
When I will be in a store I found its best to park beside the shopping cart return bin . There is room beside it to park and cable or chain up to . I also use a disc lock on the front and a forged ubolt lock through the rear wheel . Its also easier to find when leaving the store . I took my x to Atlanta airport and was amazed how incredibly huge it was . Well I spent over an hour looking for my Jeep . From then on I always mark my parking spot and try to use landmarks like a pole light to mark where I am at for huge lots with more than one parking area .
It is much cheaper to buy locks , cables and chain than a new scooter . Bicycle sections of retail stores have some stuff like a Bell cable lock which is thicker than most and uses a key instead of combination that is easy to crack and only use the key to unlock and it clips back together easily with no key required . I also have a Brink cable with round key and is very thick cable . The Brink is stiffer and requires the key to lock . Masterlock has a giant ubolt lock that is forged and very hard . I first bought two when I rode a Canondale ( expensive mountain bicycle ) and tested one to see how strong it was . Well it took forever to cut with a hacksaw and it wore the teeth off a Sawzall blade and hand held bolt cutters it chipped a jaw . I put these through the wheels to be a disabler and route a cable through . The 15 dollar one is clunky and needs key to lock and unlock . The 25 dollar one is much better as its not clunky , the keyhole is in the middle and has a slideable cover to protect from rain or other stuff getting in the keyhole . A vinyl cable will not scratch up your scooter like a chain that is not wrapped . I use a Bike Club ( it looks like a thick square shaped tube ) it has 3 keys the round style is too thick for bolt cutters and its fits perfectly around my kickstand and takes a lil finesse to put on since its an exact fit and the spring will need to be pushed back in order to lock it . The BC splits in half and can also go through the wheel . My scooter has killswitch in the kickstand that even kills the fuel pump . I bought Masterlock disc brakes from Greg and they work great . Its very thick solid metal that attaches through a vent hole in the brake rotor and will prevent the wheel from rotating around . It comes with 3 keys and 1 of them has a LED to help find the keyhole . I wish I had LED on my scooter keys but I bought a tiny LED flashlight that goes on a keychain just for that purpose . Now for at home I bought a very thick chain that had to use huge cutters that laydown on its side as too big and heavy to hold and use and beyond the abilities of handheld type . Most hardware stores have a heavy chain for around 5 dollars a foot . I saw a 3 foot heavy chain at Wallyworld in hardware section for the same price . I use the chain through the ubolts so I will not scratch my scooters as its uncovered . I recently saw a super thick cable lock with ballbearings in the cable wrap and was around an inch and a half thick with key lock , but costs 60 dollars , but I am sure its worth it to provide more security than the others can do .
If you lock up your scooter please make sure to unlock before you start it . I have one buddy who started his scooter up with a ubolt on the rear and it smashed his tail light lens . Another had a cable on the front and broke the speedometer cable and hub .
I am amazed how I see so many scooters in a parking lot that are not locked or cabled up . It only takes a minute to put a scooter in a truck and drive away and the steering lock can be broken with a hard turn with the handgrips as its just a peg and would be better if it had more than one peg so it would be harder to break .
So to ensure you can enjoy your scooter and not become a victim of a thief buy some locks and cables since they are much cheaper than another scooter and store easily under the seat .
If you register your 49cc as a motorcyle and get a tag and insurance will make it easier to recover if stolen . Most mopeds do not get registered ( you can register a moped in SC ) and without a MSO its hard to recover and scooters are stolen so much you need to not be an easy target . In SC its 10 to register , 15 for a tag , tax was 34 and insurance was 56 a year with 5,000 med pay and roadside . Just liability would have been 35 . 150s the insurance is around 90 a year .
I do not know why some many fear getting a motorcycle permit as its a computerized test just like the automotive license and permit is good for 6 months , does not need a licensed driver . The road test in Sc is much easier too , just do a straight line and back , a wide slalom , stop on a ramp without rolling backwards and go across a painting of railroad tracks . I got mine when I was 16 on a Suzuki GS550 in the rain and on a scooter will be easier as they maneuver easier
