Howdy all,
I have been reading all the good info here and have to say that it gave me the confidence to purchase a Chinese scooter. Although I don't have any experience with motorcycle engines, I am a general contractor and am pretty good with my hands. I purchased the Supermax 150 from Tao Tao (aka CY 150-C). It arrived in good condition and I had a friend help me put it together.
Based on the recommendations here we changed the spark plug, fuel filter and all the vacuum and fuel lines. I plan on changing the engine oil and gear oil at 50 miles. At that time I also plan on changing out the light bulbs for LED's, I've already experienced how weak the batteries are and how easily they drain.
I have two questions for the forum: Would another ( USA made) battery give me more hours of service? and how the heck do I change the gear oil?
My buddy who has some experience in scooters, and I (who doesn't) could not figure out how to change the gear oil or even what to take apart to get to it. He used to have scooters in Colombia many years ago, and did not recognize many of the parts on the Chinese scoot. He is a good friend and very willing to help, but he admits bikes have changed in the past 20 years. Hey, I get help where I can find it!
Today we finished assembly and got it running. It was quite a thrill riding it up and down the block at a roaring 20 mph. I was a little nervous not having a tag or license yet. This is Miami and not exactly a lonely country road. Also I know that I have to baby it for a while. But hey, I was "born to be wild"! Well, sort of...
Plan on keeping you all updated on my super-scoot and appreciate any advice or comments you may have.
Zoom-zoom,
Jorge "MiamiStyle1"

howdy yer'self and welcome to the forum. i would certainly second the one that suggested you not run the "oil" that came in it at all. american car manufacturers used to put break in oil in the engine before sale, but i wouldn't count on it with the chinese. as someone suggested, with air cooled engines , it is especially important to run hard for a minute or so and then off throttle a little and let cooling and oiling take place, then back on throttle for a couple minutes. etc. anytime then after running for a while, you find the oil usage to have diminished, you can assume ring break in has occurred and quit babying it at all.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya

Thanks all for the welcome and advise. I find I'm a little embarrassed wearing the helmet and all the rest while riding a "kids bike". But I know you all are right and I just have to get off it. And thanks for the links.
So now you all got me re-thinking my oil change at 50 miles. I think I'll change it this weekend. It's cheap insurance anyway.
I know there are different opinions, but what is the best way to break in my new scooter? What should I look for?

Just finished my Motorcycle course, very well thought out. Good advise and piratical training. I'll have my endorsement by Wednesday, the same day I plan on getting my title (Bill of Sale just came in yesterday). Then I'm ON THE ROAD !
Can't wait.

hody, i have found the best system for quick efficient break in is to ride throttle on for a mile or so then off for few seconds and repeat for as long as you are driving for the first few hundred miles. after 400 miles or so, you should change the oil and can then drive as you will. some will disagree, but generally this is adequate

Update:
Found a video on YouTube and was successful changing the gear oil. Wow, that stuff sure is thick.
Have ridden it around the neighborhood a few times. It's peppy but I don't think the spedo is correct, I can't be going THAT fast!
What about the break fluid? I see some people advise it, but not everyone. Is there a danger? Should I be changing out the break fluid too?

Hi Jorge The speedometers on these can vary greatly, mine read only 1 or 2 mph lower then actual speed, others can be off by quite a bit reading either higher or lower then the actual speed I would think your good with the brake fluid she came with, but if its a concern then by all means do change it Take care and drive safely Yours Hank

heynot to disagree with the hankers 'cause he's forgotten more about scoots than i know' BUT,.. WTH its cheap stuff. and better safe then sorry. when i did chrissy's, i swapped it out, ran her for a week, swapped it out again. sometimes when i change reg oil, if it looks ?&%? i run 50 miles on new and change again. $8 a qt? & $.06 of B.A. ehhhhh i'll do it for 5,000 more miles

Welcome yes the first thing is change engine and gear oil since its crappy shipping oil in both replace with Castrol . Also replace the fuel filter and sparkplug with a NGK iridium one so its runs at its best .
Go over the nuts and bolts as they will get loosened from riding and in shipping
LED tail light needs to have white light for tag and most are only red or wire in a white small LED to illuminate the tag . The 1157 installs like a bulb with no mods .LED blinkers will need a new relay .
On break in avoid too fast of takeoffs and over revving downhill and get on it at around midrange speed of what it can do at various rpm ranges and avoid any long term at the same rpm . Its new so its tight and after some miles it will loosen up and go faster later . Change the oil again in both sections at 300 miles and again at 1,000 miles . Multiply .062 to convert kilometers to miles if needed
