Hello to all...I am brand new to your forum and just purchased a couple of new Tao Tao scooters.
I just want to share our experience with other scooter enthusiasts.
I have been riding 2 wheelers (street bikes 250cc to 1600 cc) but this will be my and my wife's firs scooters. We purchased a Tao Tao CY50 t-3 and a Tao Tao ATM 150 A.
They arrived a couple of days ago (via 18 wheeler) and were dropped off at our house. Other than a pretty well scratched up panel and a broken rear turn signal, they looked in pretty decent shape.
I proceeded to put them together over the next couple of evenings and it's a good thing I am mechanically inclined. They come with a video CD that you can play on your PC but are pretty general in nature. Sure they show where the parts go, but that don't show you the specific bolts to use for a given part. This is where common sense and some experience come in handy. One problem I had was mounting (of all things) the luggage rack on the CY50-T3. 2 out of the 3 bolts necessary to mount it to the frame were about 1" too short.. Thank goodness for a Hardware store that carried metric bolts.
The other problem was mounting the included storage trunk. Again problems with the bolt holes not aligning with the luggage rack. A cordless drill fixed that problem...Other than those minor problems, I was able to complete the assembly, do a nut/bolt check on the scooter, check the fluids, put some gas in it and after 4 tries on the starter button it fired right up. It is running fine so far and my wife is really enjoying it. The only "issue" so far is that the speedometer and odometer are WAY off. The speedometer reads about 11 MPH too fast and of course the odometer reads more KM than we actually travel as a result. One additional gripe is the owner's manual which is full of mistakes, incorrect illustrations and "vague " information. One example is for which motor oil to use: no specific type or weight mentioned in the manual. Will extra virgin olive oil work? Ha Ha afraid not....My guess will be 10/30W or 10/40W.
Now for the ATM150-A.. Again I was able to assemble it in about 3.5 hours including a nut/bolt check and a fluids check. The video and owners manual shipped with this one were/are completely useless as they area for another model (CY150 ), although they put a sticker on the manual with the correct model number. Again, thank goodness for common sense and some previous experience putting bikes/cars together. The scooter fired up on the third try and so far it is running well (40 KM so far). The speedometer on this one is fairly accurate when I compared it to my GPS readout. This speedometer in only 2 to 3 MPH fast as compared to the CY50 T-3 which is 11MPH too fast.
The only other "gripe" I have so far with the scooter is that the information lights (turn signal/high beam etc) on the instrument cluster are just about useless in the daytime. This is due to the low intensity of the lamps and the poor angle of the instrument cluster as it relates to the driver.
Hope this is not too long, but just trying to relate our experience thus far. Thanks to all....
