I still see many people on a scooter without a helmet or even sunglasses . Your eyesight is so precious and even those dollar sunglasses or safety glaases will block foreign items like a rock or insect from striking the eyes . Wind can also be an issue as the faster you go the more pressure against your eyes . I drove a CBR up to 160 MPH but had to stop since the pressure made my eyes squirt water out so bad I could not see . I did not have on a helmet and yes I know it was stupid . I have had insects hit my face and ouch , glad it was my forehead and not an eye . Rain is dangerous to impair vision on nakid eyes . I do hate it when my faceshield and eyeglasses fog up when it rains . Its so humid here than even on rainless nights they can fog up when its cold too . I use antifog wipes from Cycle Gear only 99 cents but need to get RainX Antifog . Make sure all glass is clean and streak free prior to applying antifog . I see many open faces without a faceshield to protect the face . My glasses are normal wirey frames but allow blowby on the sides , and are tight in my helmet with balaclava on . Even with them on I still get bothered by wind if I go fast . My new eyeglasses are rec specs or sport style . They wrap around my face and do not stick out on the corners like normal ones do . My new ones have a foam pad all the way around my eyes , do not have nose pads that pinch my nose and are so much more comfortable to wear . I got them tinted dark , antiglare , antiscratch , polarized and are Nikon lens . Surprisingly was not made in China but were made in Taiwan like the better scooters . I love em and plan on getting another pair but light amber tint for night . The Sun and lights blind me and I thought it was best to have dark so no need for glasses over glasses sunglasses . I got a great pair of GOG at CVS for 20 , much better than HD Vision . They help me see better but I did not want to have to wear two pair . Both pair of my eyeglaases have polycarbonic lens since thinner and much stronger than plastic , even better than most safety glasses for direct impact . My rec specs contour my face and I have tapped all around to simulate a light impact and they work great . My others are so wimpy and hurt with light impact test . The new ones also block wind from the sides where the others did not . It was neat to see headlights in amber color , but too rainy and foggy to do much night riding . I have a lil loss of sight in real dark areas but worth giving it up to not be blinded by oncoming lights . I have retina damage from welding arcs and see halos around bright lights So in short if you ride without a fullface helmet you should at least wear sunglasses to protect your eyes Attachments:

Reminds me of old racecar or airplane videos . I wore goggles when I was trail riding . I loved the Roll Offs as knobbies kick up mud and it sucked to have to stop and wipe em off to see . We played tag with mud , we would spin it on each other , just silly teen good fun .
If you wear eyeglasses check out some rec specs . The Walmart ones look close to Oakleys but 100 bucks less . I had to get special lenses made as my eyes are so bad Nikon did not normally make them as thick . 8 and 9.5 for those inquiring minds .
My others the scew kept jumping loose and the lens fell out . Screws were so soft like wet paper and they were from a high dollar optician . I had use use Super Glue . I had to put on glasses , the balaclava and then my helmet . Was to tight to put on glasses last . My helmet fits so snug like it was tailored for me . The eye opening in the balaclava is kinda small and was pulling on my glasses . The new ones are effected since they wrap my face and do not stick out .
I am ever so happy with rec specs I truly think those of us who wear eyeglasses will enjoy a pair too

In my 37 years as a service tech. for telephone company it was drilled into me to always wear safety glasses. I have seen a few nasty injuries and near injuries (saved by safety glasses) to the eye. I don't even cut the lawn without them. My baby blues may not be 20 20 but are still fully operational thanks to safety glasses.

I don't do anything (well almost anything) without wearing safety glasses. About 8 years ago I was grinding mounts on an axle under a car and then all the sudden a gust of wind blew an I had metal dust lodged in my eyes. I can see well now but I was lucky to see the eye doctor in time before I went blind. It's stuff like that I can never forget, but I don't think anyone could forget having metal magnetically pulled out of your eyes lol. Protect them peepers!!!

Yeah Inkyben, you haven't lived until you see your friends eyeball bulge where the magnet goes over a piece of metal. I don't care how manly you are, you will pucker up.

I always ride with my face shield down, but when I was using my Dremel to cut down my plexiglass windshield I didn't wear eye protection and ended up in the emergency room with a scratched cornea. I was so happy to get a good deal on the windshield then blew $400 on an emergency room visit!! I'm too cheap to be careless!

But did you guys know that those yellow tint safety/shooting glasses work GREAT at dusk or dawn They seem to actually enhance fading or low light, not good for bright light though.
Can I survey at what age most of you started wearing sunglasses? I was an avid skier in my youth and believe I damaged my eyes by NOT wearing sunglasses until I was 16/17. I constantly try to get my daughter to wear them but haven't had much luck.

I was 11 when I first got eyeglasses . I love my new polarized rec specs . Bright lights have a bronze look through them . I plan on getting another pair but not tinted as dark for night time . The rec specs block the sides to prevent wind or debri from getting into the eyes and has a foam pad all around both eyes . They are cheap at Walmart frames only 45 but with my polycarbonate lens at high strength was 210 with tax still not bad . Oakleys were 155 for just the frames ay my eye doctor and these look similar and made in Taiwan not China . I looked up the law here and under 21 must have helmet and eye protection older its up to you but suggested . I rode in the rain with contancts and no helmet only once it was a nightmare as a contact slide around and I could not see not to mention the stinging of rain against my face .
I have seen a few with those red Baron goggles but only look right on a classic Vespa style scooter

My issue is that they never seem to make safety glasses that fit Asian faces. Even ski goggles don't fit me. Luckily I have a face shield and I tend to tilt my face down to keep the air from flowing up behind the shield and into my eyes.

But did you guys know that those yellow tint safety/shooting glasses work GREAT at dusk or dawn They seem to actually enhance fading or low light, not good for bright light though. That's what I use; $5 @ Wally World. I like the yellow tint for the same reason, and they also seem to help a little with my color vision (I'm effectively colorblind; I see the world in living color, just apparently not all the right colors. ) Anyway they do make good sunglasses, they fit well under the full face helmet, and they are ANSI compliant safety glasses. Seems a total winner to me.

I passed the eye exam fine for renewal. I never wear sunglasses, just don't like them.

I now have another pair with same style of frames but with Transition lenses . I love how they block the wind and debri from getting into my eyes Great thread Skutt... and ppl need to be made aware that its not abt looking like a goon or feeling macho when the need to wear one is of essential concern to one's eye and given the kind of dust particles that looms the air and/or travels just as fast as you head forward when it impacts into the face & cornea... this thread is a responsible move & urge to remind ourselves and others of the importance. Mine is pretty dark, well, if you try looking into it to spot my eyeball which you can't but I'm seeing more than midday at you even if we are having dinner by candlelight. ;D In our country, ppl get upset when you walk into a shop, even if outside is blazing hot and sunny, and the sunglasses are still on!!! But I don't care what ppl think, I do take it off though when speaking at close proximity with someone in front of me who is providing service to my needs or queries, that I do for courtesy but strolling inside the shop accompanying my wife on our shopping spree... NO WAY will I take it off to ease other ppls discomfort. Its nice to see ppl and their twitchy insincere looks and they don't know that...LoL Like you Skutt, I have this snuggly fit glasses from Bobsters Trident glasses and they are superb!! Walk along any beach with a strong sandy wind and yr eyes are protected from any sand specs from getting in or from under or around. But wearing is a safe responsibility one should give to one's precious eyes, don't fool nor treat lightly on this vital organ if one likes to stay free & mobile unlike a blind invalid would be.

Hi Its a Law in CT that you to have to wear eye protection while riding motorbikes of any type No helmet law though, kinda makes you wonder Not hard to figure out. A helmet is for one's own protection. Nobody else is going to be hurt - directly, anyway - if a rider splatters the contents of his skull all over the pavement. But a rider CAN do a lot of damage if he gets something in his eye at speed. Hit another vehicle, or cause a vehicle to crash to avoid hitting the rider. I think that's a reasonable balance between personal freedoms and public safety. (FWIW, I wear a helment 80-90 percent of the time. Full face shield as well...my big-bike helmet; good substitute for a windshield.)
