Hey guys,
I am contemplating opening a scooter store with my brother in California. I am trying to get as much information as I possibly can in regards to this. Recommendations, ideas, things to not do, legalities, etc. I really think that this is a great business to get into as I enjoy riding myself and I know that given the times we live in there is a great market for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need to talk to Maine peace scooters, Google same.
Greg is a good fella, he has a pretty good sense of decency,
and he is open to new thinking, rare some times among wrenchers

DO check with the California DMV and EPA. I think California has different vehicle import laws than the rest of the country. There are many performance products that are considered "off road use only" in California.

CA is really a pain with all the regulations. Anything over 50cc needs to CARB approved. Only company I know for sure is CARB is Znen. Have been many problems in the past with Jonway and the products Roketa sold. They claimed some things were approved but later proven were not some went to jail etc... Don't know what is going with that now.

i don't know much about maine or california regs but in jersey (where i am from),,,,it is not easy getting approval from the state. A friend of mine has been trying to get a licence to operate a scooter store and has had to go through everything from being finger printed and investigated (sounds tougher than adopting a baby)......took the state about 18 months to 'provisionally"approve him....
but that's not the real hurdle.....which is getting certified to sell, repair and operate under a given brand. piaggio would not take him on as they have a major dealer in jersey city (about 5 miles away from where he wants to open up.....he has also had kymco in as well as sym and genuine....as i understand consignment penalty fees also enter into the mix....and you need quite a bit of capitol.....to get started... genuine seemed to be the most willing to work with him (perhaps because there are very few genuine dealers in the area).....the last time i saw him he was working on a business plan for winter scooter storage and spring start ups/repairs as he has a number of garages but is still working on actually selling and servicing scooters...
i would be interested in what you learn from maine scooters....and wish you the best of luck on your new enterprise...Robo
