It was dark...snowy... and windy. Perfect scooter riding weather? Ummmm... no! So we took 4 wheels. And you never know what you might see when riding the Colorado rockies, so always bring a camera. This was one of those days. From Durango, we cruised east over Wolf Creek Pass (10,850 feet) and glided back down into South Fork. Turning north toward the famous Alfred Packer town of Lake City, we encountered this unassuming character perched on the Rio Grande River sign. Attachments:

WOW.... didn't realize my pictures would stir up so much controversy at the DRAMA BOARD! I must be an artistic genius - a real risk taker!
Nah... all it takes is a loud mouth typing in all caps.

Thanks, pony - it was beautiful out there. It does take some serious horsepower to make those passes (fuel injection helps a LOT, too). When we were there, we rode as many as we could - but on 1300 to 1800 cc machines that barely flinched at any altitude.

What was even more amazing was that we passed him, realized what we saw, got turned around, camera out and he was still there! He was a poser for Al that's for sure! Never saw an owl out like that in the daytime or maybe it was so dark he thought it was night? Anyway, one of our amazing experiences!!!

seeing the largest of birds fly near you has been experienced as a religious moment by folks for century's. I had a friend who took a nap in a field and he woke to a hawk circling and the bird dropped a big wing feather near him, he said it almost gave him a heart attack, and tho illegal he kept the feather. Once I watched a mating set of eagles fly and a hawk came flying thru, but no where near the eagles, the male eagle flew out at the hawk and tried to peck it, the hawk just kept flying, the eagle flew out again and tried to peck the hawk again, and the hawk dodged him and flew on, then for a third time the male eagle went out to peck the hawk, while the eagle was still about 50 yards away, the hawk turned and flapped in a blur of fury and hit that eagle in the neck and flew straight on for the female eagle who took off. The male eagle fell out of the sky to the ground. I almost crapped my self. Later a birder told me that the hawk knew the third hit by the eagle would have taken him out because his maturity made the eagle think he was a wimp, and he just defended himself, he said eagles are solitary but vicious, un like hawks that recoil from violence un less they must indulge to survive. click picture below to get as close as you will ever get.
