My mechanic told me today he couldn't fix my brakes but he can make my horn louder!

Rear drums ? Mine squeaked badly from day one like they were worn out but worked fine . It is normal for brakes to make noise since they vibrate when in use . There is shims and brake grease to quiet them down . Do not use any brake silencing spray as it may get on contact surfaces . Remove the wheel an apply brake grease around 99 cent for a packet at any autoparts store . Also prior to grease take a rag and wipe off dust from shoes and drum . Spray a tiny amount of brake cleaner on rag so it will kick up dust as you DO NOT want to inhale it . I hate cabled drums since requires removal of exhaust and wheel to service , squeak , cable stretch and break . Disc brakes are the way to go and have much more stopping power and simple to replace pads .
Maybe one day someone will invent a cable to hydraulic conversion kit for drum brakes .
Disc brakes use grease and or shims to hold in place tighter and prevent it from vibrating which emits noise . When pads are worn the get pushed out further and make noise to tell you they need replacing before they grind your rotor up .
