Hi! I've been lurking for a few days, and this seems to be THE place on the internet to talk about scooters. I really want to get one, the only problem is I'm very heavy. I was always a big guy, but I really ballooned up the last four years at college. I was 400 at my peak. I've been working on losing weight since graduating, and I haven't weighed myself, but I'm probably down to about 360. (I've lost about four inches off my waist.)
My problem is that is pretty much the limit for the combined rider weight of most of the scooters I've seen. If I do find a scooter that the info says can take more, I'll see that same scooter somewhere else with different info saying it can only hold 300 or 350 pounds. I'm thinking of getting an el cheapo Chinese 250cc scooter, because they have actually had some of the higher passenger weights.
Any help? I'm really hoping someone more knowledgeable can point me in the right direction. I don't want to get a scooter and then snap it in half the first time I sit on it.

I'll be honest...at your weight I think your better off above 250cc. The lower the cc the less the power, and again...since your a bigger person that can be an issue.
Suzuki Burgman 650 may be the way to go here. Of course I'm biased being the owner of a 400cc Burgie.
Trikes might be better too, as the weight could be distributed over 3 wheels and not two.
I will be honest though, I've not seen much info on combined rider weights for most scooters.

You should look into a CF Moto Fashion 250. I have several customers who ride all the time with passengers which is a combined weight of more than what you have. They hold up very well. The Max weight is listed as 330lbs, but I don't think a few extra lbs would hurt it.

Max weight on my Honda Reflex is 366 lbs. You can still find these used for around $1500 that are in very good shape.

look i am about 6 feet and weigh about 220 and still don't feel comfortable riding two up with a 300 cc scooter with hp over 30......i don't think there is any cheap way around your problem.......i also have a 250cc with hp of 25..at 7500 rpm....and i can tell you even at your current weight riding pleasurably with two up would be a challenge...
so you can try the bergman 400 (i have seen used for about 2500 dollars or perhaps a piaggio 500 cc......(x-9).....seen for 2800 dollars.....either way i am sympathetic to your plight and wish you luck on your weight reduction efforts....

a good suggestion from mike if you have deep pockets....scarabo top of the line....which is why i still say look into the piaggio x-9.... 500i no longer available in usa but can get parts for it .....and is lite like the scarabeo...and handles like a sports bike.....better suited for both city riding and touring
the burgman 650....is a big job,,,much more difficult to navigate in local/city traffic....imo......so the other question has to do with what type of riding you do plan on doing?

I'll be doing a little bit of both kinds of driving. I'll be moving out to the country soon, so I'll have to do about five miles of highway riding (~about 55-65) to get to the city. I'd also like to be able to drive down to Corpus Christi (I'm just north of San Antonio) if necessary, though I can borrow a car if necessary
I don't plan on having any passengers, especially since I'm already as heavy as two people, but I may need to carry a suit and some other clean clothes if I need to go to Corpus.
I've though about going the trike route, but I don't care for the way they look, and I don't really understand Texas' laws when it comes to registration and insurance and what makes them street legal.
Also I don't have much money. That's part of the reason I'm going the scooter route. They are inexpensive and save gas. I'm more than willing to do maintenance myself. I'm kind of a jack of all nerdiness. I feel as at home working on a motor as I do in the lab (I was a chemistry major.)

zeke...it does not sound like you will be doing an excessive amount of highway driving and since you will be one up......i guess you can get by with a 250 cc.....since you are going chinese ....i would consider the cf moto above or linhai....i think they do a 300 cc....
look around on craigs list you may be able to get something in your price range.....
san antonio...one of the best kept secret vacation spots ...in texas....been there a number of times ...love the canal walk and those oysters.....good luck....

Yamaha Morphous has a capacity of around 400lbs I believe. Lots of leg room for tall folks. My Dad rode mine a couple of times and he's about 6'1" 350lbs. He said he felt top heavy but also hadnt been a rider for 20 years. Pretty reasonably priced

I'm thinking of getting an el cheapo Chinese 250cc
taking the time to clearly read your post i would say get a bms 260cc
its a mother of a water cooled and great back up for all parts.
call BMS and tell them to find you one at some place close,
very good electric fuel injection, 15 horse power, special suspension.

I am at 200 lbs.. sort of thin legs and arms, but big gut.. lol... There is alot to consider on buying a scoot. 1. how long it will last carrying alot of wieght.. 2. the smaller the cc the less wieght it can carry.. Example: The wieght capacity of my friends 50cc scooter is 200 lbs but also his scooter only has one shock on the rear. My scooter is a 250cc Bali and has 2 rear shocks and says 500 lbs capacity- but I seriously doubt this. More like 360 lbs capacity. www.extreme-scooters.com It carried 500 lbs but would not do that day in and day out. Carried my neighbor 280 lbs and girlfriend 220 lbs.. around the block and down the 55 mph highway. But usually it carries only me- 200 lbs.. Better off with a 400cc or 500cc scoot..

My Jonway yy250t has a max load of 385pounds listed, and I'm sure I've had it close to that with storage and 2-up on occasion. The only issue riding were the difference in turns and braking, nothing in regards to whether or not the engine handle us. The acceleration was still good enough and the highway speeds were unchanged from riding alone as far as I could tell.
Just remember to factor in whatever you may be storing if you're cutting it close to the spec.
Edit: There seem to be discrepancies in max load specs, lol. Scary.

I would like to state something.. We all ride 250cc scooters with a wieght capacity of 350 lbs to 400 lbs.. Zeke is a good person but wieghs 360 lbs.. Now 360 lbs maybe a little to much wieght for a 250cc to handle day in and day out. The transmission would breakdown faster, going up hills it would bog down more, ect.. I really think Zeke is better off with a Suzuki 400cc scooter, that cost $6000 verses a cheap chinese scooter that will fall apart quicker due to the wieght issue. Might pick up one for $3000 in great shape..

chaz in his case i would agree.....you can get a mid-level chinese 300 but in reality given his size.....i would go for a 400 cc.....as i said earlier in this loop.....there is no cheap way around this....unless you go for quality you will only wind up spending more money anyway....
