i have had many bike wrecks. In fact I went through 1200$ worth of shoei helmets in 10days. Both times they saved my life. The second helmet took an impact to a mailbox on a 4x4 at 120mph and shattered. My head did not. The day before that wreck I decided to see what my cbr900rr would do top end. I had a good run coming down a hill on a 4 lane road. I knew that I would look like a spec to cars coming up on them and that I had to get by them quickly. I had just passed 155 (by speedo) and was passing a car in the slow lane. As I came up on the car the drivers window came down. As i pulled along side I saw a cup come flying out. I get hit in the throat and face by an empty McDonalds cup with ice in it. It cracked my shield and welted my throat so badly I could hardly breathe. There was nothing I could do but hang on and keep it pinned. Since I got the scoot and it was nice out I started putting around town. It was fun and I wasnt wearing a helmet most of the time. Then I was reminded what it felt like when they were cleaning the gravel out of my knee (all the skin was ripped off my rt. knee) with a red scpotch brite and iodine. How wonderful all the scars on my legs and hips and arm look. I ordered a helmet the next day. Its not if its when. think of this. go to some batting cages and get in the slow speed one. dont wear a helmet and let the ball hit in you in the head. It should be doing around 40-50 mph. LMK how it feels. If you are only doing 20 mph and get hit by a car doing 25 mph thats a 45 mph combined force impact. Of course its freedom of choice and I am know one to preach to the choir, but if you dont wear a helmet for yourself do it for the ones who love and care about you. I just got a gmax helmet off of the bay for 86$ shipped. It fits well and looks really good for the price. It also has built in leds in the back that blink for use on dark or foggy days. it also has a built in smoked 1/2 shield so I dont need to wear sun glasses under the helmet and can still use a clear shield.

My full-faced helmet is a Yamaha Snowmobile helmet. (Snow Force)
Nice and toasty warm during the fall & winter.
I do wear a half lid during the warmer months however.

I plan to use a helmet all the time. I just got an open face helmet with visor that showed up yesterday, it's nice.

At first, no helmet or a half. But after getting smacked in the face a few times by bugs (one stuck in my eye for 10 minutes) I decided better safe than sorry. Now it's a full face every time. Armored Jacket 90% of the time as well. Gloves mostly because my grips feel sticky to my hands (dont like the feel).

Full face always, the only time I really don't like it when I come out of the gym sweatin like the pig I am. I'll try to cool off a bit before I leave when I think about wearing that same helmet the next day. Last month I took the lining out and washed it, by hand of course. My 16 year old daughter says she wouldn't if I didn't make her. Helmet, good, fractured skull....not so much. I wrecked on my mountain bike years ago broke my collar bone and the helmet I was wearing had a huge crack which would have been my head.

My GMax helmet has 3 vents around mouth , two on top and one on the back to allow air out . It still gets hot when above 90 and stationary , but cools down when scooting . I have almost surgical driving skills and had my share of stunt driving as a teen , its the other people who pose a danger to us . I wear a fullface and feel much safer than when without it . I had a fullface save my life and right side of my face since I did the Superman at 70 mph across pavement . A friend lost 6 teeth from a wreck with no helmet . Almost every 2 or 3 weeks here there is a scooter wreck on the news ,some fatal . When its scooter vs a car , the car always wins . Today I met a guy who had a 50 and asked why in the world do I have a helmet on . No helmet does not make you look cool or show your a tough guy . Those no wearing fall into the " hey watch this " and end up on the news . Plus they keep you warmer in winter which is another plus

Dress for the crash, not the ride. Was driving back to my ambulance station from a call, and saw a biker get hit full in the face by a brick that bounced out of the truck in front of him (AZ has very lax laws regarding load securing ), He was going aprx 70MPH, and so was the truck. He went down and his bike kept going. We called in the accident, lit up our box, and turn around to return to the scene. The dude was in full gear, his jacket was worn through to the armor on both elbows, and to his skin in a few places, though his road rash was extremely minor. His helmet was split in half, and only partially on his head, but he was conscious, had stood up before we got back to him, and was over-all fine, we didn't even transport him to a trauma center, just a normal ER. His bike was a total mess, and the truck never even knew that anything happened as far as we could tell. We gave the biker a small piece of the brick that hit him, at his request. He said he was going to keep it forever. Had he not been wearing a helmet, he would have been dead before he hit the ground. Had he not been wearing the rest of the gear, he would have been hamburger, but probably lived. Ask yourself how much LESS that brick would have hurt you on a scooter, which is ONLY going 40-50 MPH... I would not want to be the judge in that test.

orehor: About your Dads friend; could it be that the hellmet was the cause of the passing out due to the heat buildup inside the helmet?

Thanks guys for all the stories. They are good remiders to be defensive all the time. It irritates me to take the time to suit up, but I take it. I always wear some sort of boots, gloves, jacket, at least jeans and FF. I am casually looking for a new FF for summer wear when it gets hot here. And I try hard to remind myselt that all that protecive efforts don't make me bullet proof when I get mounted. dam 4 wheelers anyway. It only takes one bast--d to ruin your life. Almost every ride I get a reminder how self centered they are. It helps a lot to have a big scoot that is capable of keeping up with traffic and running the speed limit even if the road is not as good as you like. I never ride the right edge of the lane but stay pretty much in the center of my lane but I swear, if I leave myself a little stopping room some dam 4 wheeler has to have that spot and will try to pass when there is only 1/2 the passing room needed to do it safely - only to turn into a driveway in an other block or two. OH well, I am still leaning when and where to ride around here that has few 4 wheelers.
Take care people. Save your life. What those intersections and oncoming fools that a re likely to turn across right in front of you.
Cheers

Helmet...hell yes! In the past I rode a Harley. Neither I nor my friends wore helmets. Watching a friend have his brains leak out on the side of the road from a wreck at 35mph due to a tire failure changed that for me.
Wear a helmet for those you love, not yourself.

And don't be stupid and go 155 mph either.

I just don't feel right without all my gear. A crash hankie just will not do for me. I also feel its your right to do as you please so if you don't want to wear one, fine by me. My rights end where your rights start.

My new gear. I also upgraded my shoes to over the ankle leather. Don't care what people think about me going 30mph dressed like a GP racer. I want to do it again tomorrow. Attachments:
