Previous History:
I had purchased this scooter back in the spring. I didn't have a dealer perform my PDI, instead I printed one off of the Internet and did it myself. The scooter ran great for 6-8 weeks. At that time I had taken it for a longer ride than normal (up until then my rides consisted of 7-15 miles at a time), probably around 30 miles. I was slowly breaking my engine in so at this point I was topping out at 45mph. After about an hour and a half of riding I was heading back into town (thankfully) at a steady 45mph when it suddenly began to bog down and then lost throttle response and slowly died. At first I thought it was out of gas, but my guage still showed around 1/16 and I could see gas in the tank. So I wound up pushing it the remaining mile to the nearest gas station and filled it up. It still wouldn't start, so I thought it might be a pressure issue. By the time I got home (about another 1/2 mile) I tried to start it again and it fired up after a couple cranks of the electric start. It ran fine for the rest of the evening.
Fast forward to July 4th. I decided to travel to the "city" and almost made it to my destination when it died again (about 12 miles into the trip). I decided not to risk continuing on and turned around to head home. A made it 3-5 miles down the road when it died again. It took awhile to get it started again after each time it died (10-15 cranks of the electric start). After that it would die every 1.5 miles or so. It took almost an hour to travel 12-15 miles!! So now I was thinking it was possibly overheating.
It ran decent for about a week or so following the last issue. But then I rode it across town (approx 1.5 miles) and had it parked for about an hour. I took off on it and it once again died a few blocks down the road. I filled it up with gas (it was at this time that I noticed my fuel guage wasn't working; stays on full) and worked the electric start 10 or so times until it started. Again, I thought it still might be a pressure issue. I brought it home and began researching online. Following online advice, I replaced my fuel and air lines, spark plug and (just to be sure) cleaned my carb making sure to check for clogs. I also adjusted the idle. After everything was put back together it once again seemed to run fine. By this time I had reached another mileage plateau and was able to push my scooter up to 50mph. I took it to a straight-away and opened the throttle. I reached 48mph when it began to bog down and then lost throttle response and died (same as before). It started quicker this time, though.
Present Day:
From then on out I've only been riding it in town, never surpassing 45mph. After some more research I'm considering removing the air filter assembly and replacing it with a 2-stage Uni filter and then increasing my main carb jet (not sure what size, though).
I'm posting to get specifics on what to purchase to fix my problem. Is there anything else I should troubleshoot before I replace the filter and carb jets? It doesn't run as well as it should and it's not reliable for a "long-distance" ride. Plus I should be reaching 55-60mph and 48mph is not going to cut it. Also when I start the scooter cold I have to rev the engine to keep it running while it's warming up (I'm not sure if it's the idle or the air flow). It takes a couple cranks to get it started, then some revving for a little bit to get it to settle at the proper idle speed.
Any help is appreciated. (Sorry for the length, I just wanted to provide as much detail as possible.)
Thanks.
