Any auto oil is fine. there is something to consider: air-cooled bikes run much hotter, so oil gets thinner when hot. That is why Harley recommends straight 60 oil for summer. If temperature of cylinder head reaches 300-350F, (it can be checked by "laser" thermometer), I am pretty sure 20W50 should be used. I'll try to check temperature next time I ride my scooter.

We use 15W40 diesel oil in our Chinese scoots. We do not use synthetic in the Chinese bikes - from our experience, we have found that the synthetic has a tendency to leak with the looser tolerances. Our Taiwan bikes like the SYM with the ceramic coated cylinder, uses a Castrol Synthetic 10W40 - tighter tolerances...

I would also like to know if anyone has ever used 20W-50 oil? I have a gallon of this oil at my store and i am thinking about using it in my scoot. Attachments:

No...50 grade is too thick for the GY6 engine oil pump...
15W40 is the maximum viscosity you should use...

I am using Valvoline VR1 Racing Formula SAE 20W-50 with no issues. Go the oil free with rebate awhile ago. Cars don't use that oil.

Hi folks! I'm new to this forum and would like to throw in my 2 cents worth. This is my 45 year riding. I have 3 asian scoots a 50cc,2 150cc, and a Suzuki c50, our cars are both Hondas. I use the same oil in all of them and have done so forever. Rotella 15-40 wt dino. If you take the time to research it on Bob is the oil guy and Blackstone labs you you will see why. People use it in Harleys and lawnmowers. A person that owns a 300,000 $ Kenworth would not use it if it was not about the best there was. Research! Ernie

Just a little Rotella vs Amsoil comparison. I personally like Amsoil, just throwing this out there(the study was conducted by Amsoil so keep that in mind).

I do agree. Amsoil is great. The big difference is price. I use sooo much oil in all my toys that price counts. Did I mention I change the oil in my little scoots every 300 miles because of no oil filters. The screen of course will filter out a stray cat if one gets sucked up in!

Amsoil is really good oil but...
Amsoil is a small company with only blending facilities, they don't have refineries to produce synthetic base stock oils.. Who do they buy these pao base stock oils from??? Their major supplier of PAO base stock is Exxon/Mobil, the largest producer of synthetic oils in the world. They purchase some Group III base stocks from Shell, Petro Canada, and others. About 90% of their additive packages come from Lubrizoil.

yeah, i use 20w50 during summer, when temp is really high...but never on winter...i use 40w thingy on winter

Post by sprocket on Aug 25, 2011 11:34:52 GMT -5
The 20W is the winter viscosity.. the 50 is the high engine heat viscosity... winter or summer the high heat viscosity is meaningless...
The winter rating is the viscosity when the oil is in the sump. You want a thinner multigrade oil in 0 degree F weather than in 80 degree F weather so the starter motor can crank the engine more easily...
As the temperature of the engine rises the viscosity thickens...winter or summer...

Yup in northern Canada they never shut off their engines in winter...the oil thickens so much that it stalls the starter motor... then you need to heat the oil pan with propane torches...
Lots of fun...

Just what I said...oil is thick when cold and thin when hot.

It doesn't matter WHAT oil you use.. what matters is how often you change it in a GY6 engine...
If you wanted added protection.. add a rare earth magnet onto the oil filter spring...stops metal particles from reticulating around the engine...or use a drain plug with a magnet...

Been using a magnet on my truck for 7 years and on the scooter since I got it.
We have beat this to death...any name brand oil 10W40 or 15W40 will work just fine. Just change it regularly and sleep well...
Now I am going out to get some ethanol free gas in the scooter..
have a good one.
