Routing out my trip to Fort Smith AR on the Silver Bullet....yup..ridding the Magnum 300cc trike from Tampa Bay area Florida to Fort Smith, AR. Right now routed with no interstates or speeds above 60 miles per hour I got it down to 1,065 miles estimated time is 21.5 hours.
Going to go light trying to keep baggage and spare parts under 80 lbs. This trip will be 3 nights on the road at 300 miles min. per day. Since not running major high ways some roads are at low speeds and I can tell you that scooter seat gets hard buy the hour after the first 3 hours.
Going to start by making out the parts list and placing new and larger tires on the rear of the trike. My rack has been installed and additional lights for safety, all LEDs. Going to leave the tall universal windshield on the trike as the wind burns also and it is summer time.
I am retired and have the time and if she breaks down I'll fix it...She has made a few 130 mile runs and 1 just under 200 miles and she just purrs and smiles sooo......why not??

WOW!! Now that is a nice trip 1000 miles, not to drastic. You should make it just fine since you will be stopping to gas up around 150 miles or so which will allow for things to cool down for the next 150 miles. Every time you fill up always check your oil just in case your dropping or blowing it out. WAY TO GO MAGGO Lefty

Am doing it for the enjoyment, only doing 300 miles a day, have done 180 miles and no big deal. Going to carrie a lap top and cell so will post as I go.
Lee, that is the tire I was looking at but I can not find the width the ones I put on my electric car are only 5 in wide 21 tall they are 165/70R-12. I must have a min off 6 inches hitting the ground or I feel the breaking will be to light. Guess I will have to waite till Monday to call as they are closed unless you found out

Mike; Lefty probably remebers but if I recall correctly the tread width is about 10" on the 255/50-12s. The palmetto site has that info on there if you want to check for sure. My only concern was putting them on a stock 6.5" rim that came on the Magnum

Best so Far I could find are : www.golfcarttirestore.com/ford_think_tires.htmMike, you want Speed Rating of one of the following, "L" "M" "N" or "P". So if they do not specify the rating Ask what the speed rating is. Altough the max load is rated at little over 1000 lbs which is very good they should be rated pretty good. Lefty

I did 1652 miles last summer in four days on my 250. I road thru the heartland in some serious heat. Let me give you some advice. Go to walmart and buy a gel pad and a wool car washing mitt (automotive section). The gel pad WILL save your ass from getting sore. Take the wool carwash mitt, split it at the seam where it is sewed together, and put it between your butt and the gel pad. Wool pads allow air between the seat pad and your butt. I don't know if you have ever had rider monkey butt before, but if it gets bad you can hardly ride. Also get a bottle of baby powder and squirt it into your boxers real good every morning before you take off. The powder helps control sweat.
If you have no problem with a sweaty crotch from sitting on a hot vinyl seat all day, disregard this advice. I wish I was going with ya. Scooter road trips on the backroads are the bomb. Have fun, be carefull, and take a sh!t load of pics.

Mikey, Just thought of another good thing to take with you, buy a TOW strap just in case, as a matter of fact buy two so you can string them together so if you need to be towed you will be about 30 feet behind the tow vehicle. They do not cost much all you need is 1000lb strength straps. I always carry one under my seat and have been towed once and I also towed my brother-in law once with my car. Lefty

Parsonsj11, Nice size tires they are not to big but you will pick up a nice 6mph on the top end. By the way the faster you go the more you pick up Lefty

main reason i decided on them is the tread pattern looks like good water repel and smoother ride on these Pa. backroads lol plus i will take all the speed i can get ;D
Also I want to add Dr. Pulley HIT Clutch and Dr. Pulley Variator.. should give better tuning and Climbing the Hills here in Western Pa.

Parsonsj11, You do not need the EXPENSIVE Dr. Pulley HIT CLUTCH. Just get the NCY Performance CLutch it has about 1" more pad on each arm. They grab the Bell really good. The Hit Clutch has the same pads but real strong springs which all it does it require a lot of RPMS to throw the Clutch arms out. Lefty

well in my looking and pondering it seems the dr pulley comes with springs to vary both the arm engagement and the arm lock up engagement rpms from ~1000-2500 rpms and the locking clutch would seem like it would help on hill climbing..
Course at this point all i know is what i read and the reviews on different magazine and forum pages. seems like it's the most tuneable clutch...
SEEMS LIKE WORTH PLAYING WITH ANYWAY...

Same thing you can do with the NCY Performanace CLutch. You can take weights off of the arms as well as change the springs.
Just trying to save you some money for bascially the same thing except for the Name and Because its a Dr. Pulley your paying for the Name Brand. Lefty

havent seen a NYC for the 300cc Magnum found malossi but price bout the same as Dr. Pulley and doesn't have shoe lock feature..... do they make NYC for over 150cc?

k Thats what i thought. The Dr. Pulley locks the shoe to the bell over a settable RPM which eliminates slippage under load. the Dr. Pulley uses 6 springs - 3 regular clutch springs and 3 Pillow springs for arm Locking. The Molossi doesn't and they're just right at the same price.

ya seems like all i've been doing is rebuilding the Magnum to make it what it should have been from day one. I got it in Feb and have been able to put a little over 100 miles on it.. list of bad stuff longer than ur arm.. and looking at what to replace for dependability's sake.. At least i'm getting to be a pretty good magnum mechanic.. never saw a scoot before this one.... LOL

parsonsj11 How you going to lift the rear deck for the 255's?? Looks to me one inch higher will not allow for the wide tire and that is why I am looking for the 215/50 I do not want to have to mod the fenders.

hey mike
it's only 1/2 - 3/4 inch on the top and my measurements it should fit ok if not i thinking about a spacer plate under the deck mount plate.
i should know this week the tires and the speedo computer is on their way..

|
|
Post by mike6736 on Jul 5, 2011 7:14:29 GMT -5
Spacer is not a problem is it that the tire s too wide at 10 inches....will still be too close on the inside. Raise deck to fare and you have to cut top of the deck fold and that is is calling for higher vibrations......Hope I am wrong they really are the ones I would like t ..Let us know what you find when you install. Sure ould ike to have them for this trip if not I will go for the 215/50s, still a liter bigger and a better tire than these are.
