We all do foolish things that could be considered breaking the law.. Like letting a friend ride a scooter above 50cc, knowing he has no riders license, can cause you to loose your riders license for 1 year in the State of Missouri. The laws are strictor in some States than others- not all laws apply to every State. Like CA laws demand a 49cc scooter be registered as a motorcycle but Missouri sees a 49cc as a motorized bicycle so no registration is required nor insurance. I was a mile from my home, camping and a thunderstorm was coming. So I packed up my gear and drove a mile home. That was breaking the law, because I have only a permit to ride in daylight hours.

I've done others, but i'd say that one's the most illegal.

Well this is a public forum and I have a business dealing with scooters and the general public. I cannot condone breaking the law, no matter how absurd the law is.

It was very tempting to do what a couple people kept telling me to do, and just ride the scooter with a learner's permit. I'm glad I held out until my MSF class and license, especially given the sheer number of cops in my area. Frankly riding my scooter still involves the "Chinascoot" stress of something breaking down on me at 55+mph or far from home. No need to add worries about breaking the law. Btw the Basic RiderCourse was a great way to get the license. (Road test waived). I took the motorcycle version, but all but the gear shifting applies to riding a scooter if you're new.

I rode it for a few weeks after I bought it without registration, but I think that's covered in the 30 days they allow you to get it registered. Why break the law, it's not hard to do it right. Probably a good reason to do it right too.
haha.. my dad (mid 50's) asked if he could take my scooter for a spin.. half jokingly I asked if he had his motorcycle endorsement. Partly because I didnt want him to dump it. He gave up and we did something else.

Here in alabama if you got your DL before like 94 you already have motorcycle endorsement! But that providing it hasn't been suspended or revolked. But our test is only a touchscreen test!

In Virginia, anything 50cc doesn't require any kind of license, registration, tag, inspection, insurance, or helmet (though many localities require helmets). I recently obtained a 150cc scoot and probably could get away with acting like it's a 50. Regardless, I'm gonna go through the hassle and expense of doing everything by the book. My logic is that it would only take one time of crossing paths with Jonny Law for me to face outrageous fines. They could charge me with driving without an endorsement, registration, tag, inspection, and insurance. For the amount that I would end up paying in fines, I could easily buy another scooter or two.

I had a motorcycle endorsement years ago... after moving states, the endorsement didn't transfer.

No, I would not break the law. As a teen I faced the possibility of facing my dad in court. Not a good prospect. At 21 I got my job that lasted 37 years. You were required to report to management any and all tickets. If you didn't, well, that was not a good prospect either. I feel better knowing I have a clean driving record (I retired with a perfect safe driving record) Riding and driving mean soooooooo much to me I will never risk the privilege.

I had my scoot for a month before my MSF. Rode around my neighbourhood only, which is private non-city streets so no license required. Didn't hit "real" streets 'til after my MSF and my motorcycle endorsement.
I had it tagged etc two days after buying it, only 'cause I bought it on a Sat.
Regarding riding after dark as Chaz did, that's an irregular situation that required putting your safety and health over breaking the law. That's different. Yes, I would've ridden at night that mile back home, rather than sit out in a thunderstorm. And I bet most cops would've let it slide, considering that situation. But otherwise, no breaking the rules. No letting a non-licensed friend ride it, no to any of those other "break the law" poll questions.

That is a good debate. If Im in a situitation its harder to do the right thing. Im and Eagle Scout so I would have built a shelter for me and my scooter. I can walk a mile in about 15 minutes but I would not want to leave my scooter. Being an avid outdoorsman, I would never break camp for rain. Maybe a tornado or something. But, If home is only a mile away, I would be tempted.
In CO, I got my insurance the day I got the scooter. I drove it daily until my registration sticker came in the mail. I kept a copy of my registration app. and my insurance in the scooter.

I rode mine at night too w/ no license. Yes, I was fool b/c I didn't know cops can cross reference your license plate with your driver license and see whether or not you have a motorcycle endorsement. Btw, I skipped the msf course and just passed the driving test to get my motorcycle endorsement b/c I'm a rebel without a cause. lol

James Dean... I was pulling a little James Dean yesterday. Super nice day, 78 degrees, riding one handed, sunglasses, shoes dragging on the ground, no helmet, 54 mph, making a beer run. A great ride!

Riding home I had a case of beer between my feet yesterday? Is that illegal?

only if you have an open one in your hand with a straw in it (it's the only way to drink beer on a scooter, I've tried it)!

In the 60's almost all motorcycles had rubber knee pads on the gas tank. Place the beer between your knee and the pad.

bout the closest to breaking the law i get is me installing a slight BBK on my scoot. i didnt even go for a big BBK as i only wanted enough umphh to get up and down hills without slowing to much as i live on the edge of the ozarks there are alot of hills. even though i know i could go a bit faster i cruise at 30mph as missouri law says if your scoot is faster than that then you need to get an endorsement. i save what little bit of throttle i have left for emergency manuevering.

My tax disc should be on display, but it's under my seat- they get stolen when on display.
My front L plate (learner plate) is under my seat because the bracket snapped and I havent gotten round to fixing it. No L plate should mean 3 points on my licence.
These kinds of things I can get away with, especially the tax disc one. Apart from those two things i'm completely legal, apart from the tint on my rear but thats arguable.

I am licensed and insured I had moped license at 14 , MC at 16 and auto at 18 . I see so many people on 150+ scooters with moped tags . Legally a moped has pedals and can only go 30 mph , even though my Tomos hit 35 , woohoo . So just because its 49cc a scooter is a motorcycle , but it seems like the police and even the DMV look the other way . I went to register my scooter and was told " we dont register scooters " had to explain it was a 150cc in motorcycle class not moped . Register is ten , a tag is 15 and ins is cheap its stupid to not be legal . Here in SC caught with no ins means your scooter is impounded and you go to jail with steep fines .I had two cops pull up beside me and laugh since I was hitting around 60 mph according to China speedo , with a big guy on a small scooter . Just the other day I had a state trooper pull up beside and ask why I was speeding . Told him I had diarrhea . He said since I had a helmet and tag he did not hit the light and let me go with a verbal warning . Most cops do not seem to worry about a slight speeding as long as you drive safe and wear a helmet . However a moped tag . no helmet ,no muffler and wrecked you get profiled as a DUI

I was grandfathered in on a mc endorsement here in indiana but had it removed a few years ago. I thought that I'd never ride another motorcycle so why have the edorsement, right? WRONG! Now I'm riding a 150cc scooter and had to do the written test to obtain a learners permit, which means no riding after sundown, no passengers, must wear a helmet at all times! Well I don't enjoy riding at night so not much problem there. Just too many bugs and the lights on these scoots leave a lot to be desired. No passengers really doesn't affect me either, as I couldn't get my wife on it if my life depended upon it! But the helmet is something else! I absolutely hate a helmet! Especially in the summertime. They are too restrictive to my vision, way too hot and a general pain in the butt! I know, I know! Nearly everyone here will say that a helmet is a lfe saver, but my experience tells me a different story.

I live on Long Island in NY I have a CDL w/hazmat, airbrakes and pass endorsment. I purchased my scoot last year and started asking all my MC riding friends to come and take the road test with me and out of about 10 people not 1 has a MC license (lol). I road all last yaer with a permit but plan on paying someone to take the road test with me this year. Insurance is a requirement here in NY no INS= a Misdemeanor with a $500 civil penalty and a lawyer is needed to make a plea.
