Hi guys I got a professional to paint my helmet black because it had skulls. Okay I must sound a punk but I am catholic and I don't want that stuff. I found a guy to paint my helmet with auto paint that they use on cars. I told him not to cover the dot tag. What would happend next would I get a ticket in california because my helmet been modified?

Painting a helmet is not wise because the paint fumes contain solvents that can weaken the lining, you know, the part that protects your head in a crash.

The lining is removable on most helmets. So you can take to out and clean it.. I painted my helmet. It was a red helmet and I painted the back in blue. Painted the lines by spray paint into aluminum foil and a brush. I put a sticker on it from Walmart. Attachments:

Hi guys I got a professional to paint my helmet black because it had skulls. why didn't you just buy a helmet that was a solid color the first time? but i don't think it has to be visible(but i would try to keep it visible just in case), i think its more like a certificate. but always wear a DOT approved helmet! www.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/pedbimot/motorcycle/unsafehelmetid/pages/page2.htm

Now I placed some tape over the DOT markings and also taped vent holes. But I wanted people to see it is DOT approved.

I am not sure if it matters, so long as you know it is DOT approved. CA might have more strict rules, than other States. For all the matters, you could paint DOT approves on the back of a helmet that is not DOT approved. So I would really think it only matters to the person wearing the helmet. Safety reasons. But you can call the CA highway patrol and ask them.. Say it is DOT approved but the painter, painted over the DOT mark.

You can remove the sticker from the outside of the helmet but keep the official sticker that's inside(usually under the lining). It's the official sticker and should have a serial number if it's a real DOT approved helmet. i think probably you'll get stopped more often then not if they notice its not there.

You are on your way to work and suddenly a cop pulls you over. You say can I help you sir.. He says, ya, I noticed your helmet is not DOT approved. You take off your helmet and say, here are my DOT numbers and explain your situation of having it painted black. He starts lecturing you for 15 to 20 minutes on identifying yourself with the outsde of your helmet. You say sir, can I go to work now. He says, no that motorcycle safety is more important. You get to work an hour late.. lol.. I am just joking.. But you never know..
