Scooter Riders is written on the back of my leather jacket. I sometime wonder if it should not say Disabled Riders. See, I had a severe stroke at age 16. The doctors wanted to keep me hospitalized for 1 year. I think this tells you how severe the stroke was. The stroke was caused by the prolapse valve in my heart, skipping beat and creating a blood clot that went to my brain. Completely paralized my right side.
Well, my right side slowly improved over the decades of trying to work with muscled. Still today, they become spastic. Spastic is when a muscle is not recieving the correct information sent by the brain, so it shakes rapidly verses doing what I want it too. But anyhow, I started riding scooters in 1993. I could not pull in the right hand brake, due to the stroke. Could give gas and shut the throttle fine. I only needed a regular class F license to ride a 49cc scooter in the State of Missouri. So in 2008, I decided to get a 250cc scooter( it would go faster but the same principle came to the 250cc as a 49cc). So I bought this scooter and got a class M license to operate in daylight hours and no passengers. Put 4300 miles on it.
I joined Twisty Riders Club this May. I started talking about not being able to pass the trainers course, because of mostly using my back brake to stop due to a stroke. The riders decided I should not be riding at all, if I don't use both brakes all the time. So I quit their stupid club.
I did try using the front brake today. It did not really seen like there was more stopping power. I wondered if my right hand was strong enough to pull the front brake in. So I trying it on gravel and 10 mph. The front tire began to skid and I said," It is working". So I will practice and practice until I am used to pulling in the front break everytime I stop. But I still don't want to join a club now, because they said I should not ride at all, if I can't use the front brake. I am a very safe rider. Never wrecked a scooter yet.
