Ice Bear 150-9 trike........My wheels have play in them. I tightened the castle nut about 1/4 turn and repined it. Did it another 1/4 turn and now it's loose again. Bad Chinese bearings??? What should I replace them with???

If it was your bearings you would hear grinding when you just push it around. Let me ask you a question and show you a picture. Does your axle have 2 screws on each side of the axle TUBE about 6 inches from each end: Lefty Look at the Screw on this Axle does your axle have Two on each side one opposite the other?

BUMMER!!! you have an Early Axle which allows the Actual Axles to move out to much, which in turn causes your Hub to move out on the Splines on the axle. Now the only thing that is stopping your Axle from competely coming out is a "C" Clip that fits in a Slot Next to the Bearing. So I would imagine your current problem is when you tighten the Castle nut the Castle NUT SLOT is to FAR IN FROM THE HOLE on the Shaft where the COTTER PIN GOES IN. So what you have to do is PUT SOME WASHERS behind the Castle Nut to Bring the Castle Nut Out and HAVE A SLOT on the Castle Line up with the HOLE IN THE SHAFT so that the Cotter pin goes in and HOLDS the Castle Nut in position so it does not loosen up. Here is what yours looks like broken down, Notice the Big "C" clips on the ends that is all that is holding the axle from coming out.ok Lefty Here is what you have to do to tighten the hub up notice the thick washer, you can get regular washers you may need a coupld on each wheel.

Am I going to have to continue to tighten these nut? I don't like the sound of having an axle pulling out. Is there any way to put screws in my axle housing.

Just to explain what they did to fix the problem from coming out to much and that is this: In the picture above that I mention about the two screws on the Axle Tube one Opposite each other what they did is the following:
They welded a Piece of pipe about 1/2 in length and about 1/8 in thickness, then they added a FLOATING WASHER about 1/2 wide that goes over the Axle and the TWO screws Screw into the Washer to hold it in place. So when the Axle starts to move out the Welded Pipe Hits the Floating Washer held by the Two screws and stops the Axle from moving out any further. Hope that explains their fix. I reported this back in 2009 on their first trikes and bitched and threatened to sue their ass for an unsafe axle. I waited 3 months but they send me a complete Brand New Axle with the Modifications on it. They also sent me a complete Axle by mistake for a 50cc Trike with the modification. I had to pay shipping but the Axles run almost $400.00 bucks. Lefty

That sucks!!! this is a brand new trike. But it is a 2010 model. I have designed machinery all my life. There has to be some retro fit.

No you cannot, not on the Axle because it is what they call an OPEN DIFFERENTIAL which means that when you make a turn the Inner Wheel Turns Less than the Outer Wheel. You can try and complain and ask for the UPGRADED AXLE .
But once you tighten it up the Bearing will be against the "C" Clip and it would not be able to move out anymore and would not be loose. Lefty

You can do just what they did, weld a piece of pipe onto the axle about 1/8 thick and then make the Floating Washer that two screws will screw into. Or you can order a New Modified Axle JUST the TUBE PLUS the Two Axles with the Float washers maybe they will sell parts of it but not the Differential.
And let me tell you that IS NOT A 2010, they fixed that problem back in 2009. If it is a NEW TRIKE I WOULD CALL UP AND COMPLAIN about your Axles Coming out and you want the NEW MODIFIED AXLE telling them it is dangerous and UNSAFE you can get hurt really bad or killed. Lefty

True.........I know about the open diff. I was thinking about a bearing plate on the outside of the housing, like a Ford 8" only smaller. I'm also going to Bitch and try to get an updated version.

I assume that bearing pressed on the axle?

Yes anything that will stop the bearing and axle from moving out will work.
YES THE BEARINGS ARE PRESSED on but you can just use a Hammer type puller to get them off.
The bearings are 6205-RS

Good luck man, let me know how you make out. Yes your right if a person is not mechanical they will be paying for for someone to fix it. And you know what MOST Scooter Mechanics would not know what in the hell to do. Best thing for them for something like that would be to go to a HOD ROD place they build the sh!t from ground up Lefty

Lefty I'm starting to think you, me, Jim, Wildmen and a couple of others should start a scooter shop that specializes, customizes and delivers quality, correct stuff. The market and need is certainly there. You have provided some incredible information to forum users so thx! This is what it is all about. r,Lee

Hello, thanks for the info. I just bought a new trike and it has the rear end without the bolts, what should I do?
I can't get the right axle to slide out after taking the "C" clip out and the left side came out just fine. I was riding, heard a knocking and the right side seemed loose which it was. Rear end wasn't greased right to begin with now the right axle I can't get out. Can you help at all? Please e-mail me at tma069@aol.com Thanks Tom

Tom, Why do you want to take the Axle Out? Just tighten it, now as you tighten it, it may move out a litte on you until it the bearing hits the "C" Clip. You do not want the HUB to wobble on the Axle Spline the HUBs Splines are not made of Harden Steel and will get damaged then you will need a New Hub. Take a look at this Axle, It is a 50cc Trike Axle with TWO MOUNTING BRACKETS does yours look like it. This is the upgraded Axle with the Floating Rings on each side. Notice the Screws about 6 inchs from each end of the Axles. The only thing that is missing on it is the Disc Break Plate. I Would Bitch and Moun about it telling them it is unsafe and dangerous and show them one of the following pictures and tell them about the Upgraded part. Lefty

Hey Roy, Sure I will part with it, I have a 150 which has 4 Mounting brackets, I was safeing it just for the Differential section. But Now I have the Shims for the Spider gears in there and even the big Bearings that go in there as well to rebuild the one on mine. I don't know if you have taken yours off or not but it is a heavy little bugger. The only difference from the 50 and 150 or just the Mounting Brackets, the 50 only has two and the 150 has 4 other than that they are the same. Lefty

Lefty, Thanks for all the help. I'm going to call next week and bitch about it and see if I can get it replaced. I'm still going to take it apart and take a look, as soon as I get the axle out... I need to get all the bad grease out of it and put it back together no matter what. I will let you know. Tom
Should I change out the bearing since I have it apart?

Sure if you have it apart might as well put in new bearings won't hurt but make it just that much better. They should be 6205-RS, it will have the number on the sides. Lefty
