That'll work, here in TX I use 10W40 Castrol Syntec for the heat in the summer and 10W30 in winter.

At my first job I asked an old master tech what the best kind of oil was, he stared at me for a minute and said "Clean". I guess it would have to be the right wieght though.

Hmmm. I just changed my oils at 30 miles and now since I've put the gear oil in it, when I start the scoot it makes a kind of lifter clatter noise. But once it gets warm, it stops. Too light of an oil? Its regular gear oil for cars.

actionjackson79; Gear oil would have no effect on what you describe as "lifter clatter" noise. That would be related to the engine valve train, not the final gear drive. If you have a 150, I prefer 15W40 in Dino oil over a 10W40. The viscosity enhancers aren't "stretched" quite as much in a 15W40 and I feel it is a better oil, formulated for hard working engines - both large and small. If you did not have this noise before the oil change, it should not be there now just because of changing oil unless you placed something really weird in the engine or not the proper quantity of oil. Could you provide a little more info?

Sorry I guess I should have given more info. I have the Strada Rx150i and recently changed the engine oil and gear oil. First off when I first got the scoot I twisted the dipstick to check the oil with the scoot on the center stand. The oil really started coming out, which I would think that someone overfilled it while it was on the kickstand sitting on its side. So I changed the oil with 3/4 of a quart of Valvoline 4 Stroke motorcycle 10w40. Now the dipstick is about to the top of the X's. I also changed the gear oil with about 4oz.'s of SAE80w-85w-90. When I put the gear oil in I put the level up until the fluid just started coming out of the top fill hole. Now this "lifter clatter" noise is just when I start the scoot cold and then it goes away when it gets warm. Any idea's?

actionjackson79; Does sound like it was over filled when you got it. From your description of what you did and the lubricants used, sounds like you did things right. Is it still in warranty? If so, talk with your dealer/supplier. Just sounds strange. How about it Stan, any ideas? Could the valve clearance just be a little wide and as it warms, noise quickly disappears as clearance reduces? Don't have much experience with the valve setup on these engines yet.

Yeah the scooter is still under warranty, I've only had it for about a week. I have more experience with cars than I do with scoots, but I guess it could just be that its new too. I only have 100 miles on the scooter so far, so maybe I'll just keep runnin it and after its broke in it will be better. I don't think its that big of a deal yet, but like I said, I know more about cars than scooters (so far ha ha) and I just wanted your guys opinion on the issue. I got it from Valley Scooters too so I know they will help. Hell I don't even have the paperwork to get it registered, plates, license, or insurance on it yet (should be here tomorrow)!! Not that I would drive it on the back roads illegally or anything like that. ;D I mean I couldn't just let it sit there!

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe a thicker gear oil because I think thats where the noise is coming from. But like I said its only at start up, after its warm its all good!

I think you're right on there. Check the valve clearance. Stan actionjackson79; Does sound like it was over filled when you got it. This noise you are describing.....does it come from the gear box or from the engine. I had a little bit of a clack from the gear box on the new 150i at first but it has resolved over time. It was only when cold.

Dawg, Yep thats exactly what the noise is and its coming from the gear box. You had the same noise for a while huh? And yes it is only when the scoot is cold.
