Hey all,
Just wanted to give an update on the 4 valve motor. I have changed the final drive gears back to stock so I can compare the 4 valve motor to the 2 valve motor. The 4 valve motor makes a ton more torque and pulls like a demon. If you are looking for more acceleration, without necessarily getting more top speed, then the 4 valve head will do the job...I only have about 400 miles on the engine now since it was rebuilt so it is hard to say what it will be like once it is completely broken in. I did a GPS test with it the other day and got 68.7 mph out of it. Now bear in mind I weigh about 250, so that isnt bad at all. I really think the two valve motor makes more power on top end, the 4 valve is a torque motor and doesnt seem as willing to rev up and give higher top speeds. That might be a function of the cam grind or my 26mm carb. I am satisfied with the performance around town now, it jumps off traffic lights and I can beat any car across the intersection that doesnt light up its tires. So if you want a good city streetfighter, try the 4-valve head, you will like it. The taller gearing that is available for the final drive is too tall and you will lose top speed if you dont use a malossi variator and clutch. with those in place with the taller gearing the bike would do an honest 78 mph going downhill. The tradeoff is acceleration from a stop. You have to get up to about 15-20 before everything starts pulling well. But with a lighter rider than me it would probably be the hot setup. So you guys that are 140 lbs soaking wet....go for it
By the way, fuel economy was about 65 mpg with the malossi variator and clutch and about 70 with the stock gearing and stock clutch and variator. So, there is news from lake woebegone....yada yada
