Man what a crazy ride on Interstates with a 150cc. It's a real miracle you weren't squashed flat. I did an 800 mile run in 24 hrs, when I was younger, on a 500cc BMW that had a monster 6 gallon gas tank. That's what made the ride easier.....no frequent stopping. The other thing was doing it in the summer without any cold temperatures (or rain). The night-riding was still dangerous, but the BMW had a great headlight. (The deer in Texas are all over the roads at night.) But I wouldn't recommend such a trip for anybody......even with a support team right behind you. But a good/exciting ride for you.....with a happy ending.

I, too, do not recommend such a trip to anybody. Riding a scooter for 24 consecutive hours is inviting disaster. But, .......... Somebody's got to do it, right? Howard

Ever heard of Rich Willey? I worked at his Kawasaki cycle store in St Louis for about six years. Nice guy, great mechanic......with an iron butt. He made several attempts at a world record time for a motorcycle ride around Australia. His last try took a little over 10 days, a ride of over 10,000 miles. At the time it was the new record......I always marveled at all his stories about the rides, but never had any desire to try anything of the sort. It's simply crazy......

impossible on a 50 CC without lots of mods and lots of balls. and being ok with a completely random route, or months of planning lol

Not impossible if you travel 41.66666666666667mph or faster the whole way, and sure you would have to plan alot, but if they can get a 50cc to go 150mph+ then this could be accomplished.

Actually, there has been a 50cc motorcycle complete an Iron Butt 1k mile ride. Prior to doing mine, I contacted the Iron Butt Association to ask what the smallest displacement nike was that completed one. I believe I have the smallest displacement SCOOTER to complete one, though.
I didn't wait til summer because then I would have to worry about both me and the bike overheating. Being exposed to 100+ degree temps and the extremely dry air would have dehydrated me to potentially dangerous levels. I knew I would be on the bike for more than 20 hours and had to take all that kind of stuff into account.
I am a ER nurse and am very aware of the effects of dehydration. Plus my wife made extra sure I was as safe as a lunatic attempting something like this could be.

Great story, great ride and a true testiment to the Buddy Scooter. I once rode a little over 250 miles on a 360cc Honda and I have to tell you my back was aching badly. I can't imagine riding 1,000 miles with virtually no time to stop and rest or eat. Some have very large b@lls! lol

Very cool, and I was contemplating riding from austin, tx to katy, tx which is about 2 or 300 miles but was going to ride on the access roads as much as possible. I'm honestly afraid it wont make it though even for that trip so congrats.

Thanks for the comment, John. I haven't been blogging lately. I am hosting a scooter rally in 2 weeks and have no time for much of anything else.
Thanks

I just don't get the people that are calling you crazy.. I understand the logistics of scooters... But I see Scooters on 1-4 going about 50-55 EVERYDAY.. With Semi's flying by. If you careful, know how to ride and know your limits, I don't think there isnt anywhere a scooter can go... Its about the speed you can travel. If your scooter goes 40.. I wouldn't go anywhere near a highway, but if your cruising at 55-65, I don't see it being a problem.. My scooter probably weighs close to some small motorcycles and well there flying down I-4 like its no tomorrow.. So I think its to each is own..
Be careful, have fun and enjoy the ride..

I don't that people think that it's crazy just having a scooter on the highway, although it is for some. There is also the fact that in west TX, the speed limit is 80mph. My 150 can maintain 55mph on flat roads, but put a hill or a headwind (both of which i experienced in my ride) and my speed goes down to 45-50mph. that means 18-wheelers pass you going 30 mph faster than you are. That can be a bit scarey.
The other, more serious issue, is riding, more or less, for 24 hours straight. Riding tired is not a good idea, and to complete 1000 miles on a small bike commits you driving well past the time when you should stop. Riding 1000 miles on a bike that can do the speed limit means you only have to ride for about 14 hours to complete it.
Riding 1000 miles on the interstate just isn't what scooters were generally made for. So, crazy? Not necessarily.
Enjoy
Howard
