Mixture of real, untrue, and hysteria. Mostly the latter two. I happen to have the very scooter they show, been running well for two years and over 3000 miles. Only real problem I've had, I caused.
I can't speak to the issues of unscrupulous mail order sellers, as I bought mine from a dealer. That also may account for my lack of problems, as they set it up properly to start with.
PA didn't suspend registration for safety or quality reasons, but because VIN #s weren't matching up with the codes the manufacturers said they were using. That's been fixed, as far as I know.

Thanks Owen,
I haven't been keeping up with things lately and hoped that it was hype.

From reading the post and looking at the advertisers listed on the left hand side of the page I'd suspect that the Vespa - Piaggio - Genuine - Kymco - Buddy - Stella & SYM Motorscooter dealers are behind the bad press. Lets face it, business is way down for most any thing including scooters. The major players charge 3-7 times as much for a similar model. Granted, my Chinese scooter is no Vespa but I'd rather buy 5 of what I have than one 150 Vespa! Remember the old saying all's fair in love and war, and the competition is playing like it's war!

Gmoney, You hit right on the Head:) BUY A VESPA, PIAGGIO, GENUINE, KYMCO etc.... and everything will be just PEACHY KEEN, No problems nothing to worry about, Oh you need a starter $500.00 please. Granted they are better quality but what you pay for ONE you can buy 3-5 Chinese scooters and really they are not bad at all. Once one of the parts goes bad usually the aftermaket replacements are better than the orginals and they don't cost you an arm and a leg. Alleyoop

Yes, the States would not deny revenue. This is something the states need badly. This is not reality.. And though some of these statements are true, the US government don't care what Americans ride.

Well I had a Chinese scooter with a gy6 engine. The engine was fine, ran good, etc but the carb was junk, I had no title, and it needed body panels bad. So I traded a computer for an old Honda Elite SE50. The computer was worth about $600 so that's what consider what I paid for it. And it runs great.

The example where they complained about the clutch bearings, belt, and flat spotted rollers catches my attention. Anyone who does the proper research before they buy knows ahead of time these things can fail. Poo on the buyer for not being better informed. As far as the belt, they are lucky it made it to 3000 miles. I've seen 50cc belts go at 1000 to 1200 miles and take the entire clutch and variator with it. Flat spotted rollers are a common experience and I just replaced a clutch last week because the bearings in it failed. The coup de gras in this example is the comment "There was no grease on the drive pulley!" At this I'll just shake my head sadly and walk away.............lol.

Looking at the complaints, I noticed that the tag issue is California only. I'm fine with that. And also, it was a VIN issue in PA.
I'm willing to accept that Chinese bikes may be of inherently lower quality. I know that Chinese manufacturing is notorious in the electronics industry for poor workmanship and quality control--but that's what happens when you exploit cheap labor

Yep - that article about PA is 2 years old. PennDot hadn't updated the database quickly enough. That's been fixed. My 2008 UM Xpeed got caught in that mess and is titled as "Special Construction" even though its really a Hyosung which is Korean. On top of that - Vespas have problems too.
