Thanks, Alleyoop. Next question: by disconnecting the cable and leaving it in drive would that eliminate the 'shudder' that so many of us have experienced? Also, how much slack in the drive chain should there be?

Wolfhound, By disconnecting the cable and leaving it in drive would that eliminate the 'shudder'. That I cannot answer with authority, I have not tried that scenerio. I don't know if releasing the tension on the cable will move the gear further or will it be at the end of its travel. Have you looked at the pictures I posted of my Revers Mechanism in the forward and reverse positions. Why don't you take the same picture sequence and post them and maybe we can tell if the position looks off.
As far as the chain slack it should be around 1/4- 3/8 of an inch when depressing between the two sprockets. Also check top and bottom because one may have more slack than the other. Alleyoop But no more than a 1/2 inch slack

Thanks, guys. Next question is: will this disconnect eliminate the "shudder" in foreward gear? And how much slack is correct in the chain? How do you adjust the chain on these bikes?

How much slack is correct in the chain? I answered that one, but look in your manual it t probably says 20mm-30mm, about 1/4-3/8.
To adjust the chain you have some work to do. You have to loosen 8 bolts to loosen the whole axle. You will see 4 adjusters they are eye bolts about 4 inchs long. Each bolt has a nut and you have to turn them in the same amount so that your axle is kept aligned.
Wolfhound put up pictures of your Reverse Mechanism one in Forward position and one in Reverse Position. Alleyoop

Thanks, Alley Oop. When the temps get above 32 I will get the beast out of the garage and try the disconnect of the shift cable. Sorry, cant take pix to send, not equiped for it. Come Spring(if you Yankees will keep that Yankee weather up your way) we have some other ideas as to handling the rear end. As for chain, my Users Manual, in true IB fashion, refers me to p30 where there is no mention of chains!!! Finally found it on p26/27. Says to take to dealer for chain replacement. It gives some more somewhat useless info and then says the chain should have 20-30 mm slack and should be adjusted irregularly as per riding conditions to maintain . Again, as per usual IB fashion it does not tell you how to adjust. Mine came with over an inch of slack as did my dealers trike. We will keep it parked til we play with the rear end and then see what we can do with it. I have a long list of things to try to correct. Any way, thanks for your advise and help. It has been appreciated. The trike will become a summer project and I will let you know what comes of it. Am trading the Tank 250 for a TGB/Peirspeed Delivery 150 and plan to sell my 50ccDelivery this summer. It is not like I dont have anything to ride!!!!

Wolfhound, An inch of slack is way to much, that may cause the chain to jump teeth and causing your shudder. Well hope you get the problems solved and when you finally get into it keep us posted. And good luck with your new Scoot. Alleyoop

Thanks, Allyoop. Was just talking to Bryan at MountainMoped and he has the same problem with his trike. They should have never shipped them that loose but what is done is done. I agree that it may well be causing the shudder or contributing to it. Too darned cold to ride right now but when it warms up we will attend to all these little problems. I hope they have corrected the problems on the newer ones that they have recieved. If not a lot of guys like me who are not wrenchers are going to be very dissapointed. Fortunately for me I have access to Bryans knowledge and wrenching ability. I am slowly learning.

Well even with the reverse cable broken, I guess that would be disconnected. My IB still shudders the first couple of take offs, then seems to be less often, the shudder seems to be the worst the slower you take off. Maybe I should look at the chain adjustment. The weather was in the low 80s here today, but no time to ride, must work too pay for more toys.

Kenb6656, LOW 80s!!! You just have to rub it in don't you:) Here its in the TEENS, heck my garage is attached but not heated and its like an ICE BOX. And your right kenb6656 if the cable is broke and it does not shudder that means the gear is meshed and its at the end of its travel. And yes it could be the chain jumping teeth, but if the cable is broke it also could be that the mechanism moved the gear to far forward and went to far past the forward gear. Now Aileronjack with a PST150-9 has a broken cable and his does not shudder going forward. Alleyoop

Ken, check your chain. Mine arrived from the factory way too loose as did Bryans. It may be what is causing the shudder. i am going to disconect the shift cable just to see what it does so fart as shudder is concerned. If AlleyOop will just quit sending us his ChiTown weather we might get some work done around here.

Might wanna check a recent conversion table... but 25mm = 1 inch 1/4 to 3/8 is too tight for any of the thousands of chains I've worked with in the last 40years. Combine that with typical chain/sprocket "tight spots, and possibly an under lubed chain or 2, just saying. Chains are "normally checked in at least 4 different points of rotation, 6 is even better. Those figures should be written down, then go back to the Tightest spot, and adjust to your tightest spec tolerance, 20mm or about 3/4". You may have spots as loose as 1.5", just the nature of the beast, with cheap chain, and low grade sprockets. Too tight will cause all sorts of problems, damage, vibrations and noises. To really maintain a non-"O"ring chain, about once every 2 months, it should be removed and cleaned with a stiff bristle parts cleaning brush and mineral spirits or kerosene, the blow all remaining residue off. Get some 80-90, 85-95, or whatever is easy to find gear lube, warm it up to about 180 degrees F, and slide the chain in. Take it off the heat, and let it soak until cool. Then take it out, and hang it over the pot for a minimum of 6 hours to drain excess off, I prefer over-night. Re-install, and lube with a suirt can of oil, NOT wd40 every 200 miles or so. Dirty, nasty, and a PIA, but if you want a smooth drivetrain, and a reasonable chain and sprocket life . Better yet..."0"ring chain. But always check conversion tables, and do it right the first time.

Wolfhound, This conversion has the differential in the same case as the reverse unit eliminating the chain--it bolts right up to the GY-6. Dual rear brakes are much better than the IB's stock brakes. It requires a little cutting and welding, but nothing that we can't do. Attachments:
