Hey All,
I just wanted to give everyone an update on my Micro Commuter. I have about 32 hours so far and I have made some good progress.
The frame is not finished yet but most of the pieces are in place. I want to triangulate a few more areas and go with aluminum sheets around the whole thing to box it in and add more strength. As of right now the body is just over 20lbs and the frame was just over 30lbs before I added the side pieces; I would guess the frame to be around 40lbs right now. I have the outside glassed, I want to reinforce the week spots with more layers of glass and then lay one more good skin of glass on the outside. I still have to glass the inside. The rear suspension is done and functional. However I might change it so I can have a little more room for the exhaust, build an intake to the side where the exhaust was originally and put the shocks back into the original locations. This brings me to the front, I wanted to hide the front shocks but more than that I want the build to be easy with as little time as possible…I will be mounting the shock to the outside, visible. I don’t mind but it makes me think about the rear again, I wanted the rear to be a bolt on but my frame was damaged on the donor so I could not do that with this one. Oh well, the front suspension will be mocked up soon and I will focus on the spindles. This is the only area where I am a little worried, that small little bolt to be used as a spindle…ehhh. I have a few ideas that should look good and make the spindle strong enough, no worries. I have to finish up the front end and build a top piece for it. While I am at it I am going to build a canopy. I will hinge them both at the front and make them interchangeable so if it a little cold or drizzly I wont have to worry about it. That brings me to the sides, I will have them open most of the time but I have inserts planed that will sit tightly in the side and add a little contrast as well as protection from some of the elements.
I hope to have less than 100 hours in the whole project when I am finished and running. It is a good goal to aim for but if it does not happen I wont be to upset. I just want it running as soon as I can so I can use it to commute to work. Here is a link to the photos and there are a few walk around videos to see. I hope you all enjoy
