I had some time to take the scoot out for a little ride yesterday so I chose to use Old Rt. 17. To use a comparison many of you are familiar with it's a short version of Rt. 66. In its heyday it connected New York City with Buffalo and was a two lane road that weaved through the hills of New York State and cut through many small towns. Rt. 17 is now a four lane highway with designated exits and eventually will be called I-86 when all the small crossroads and individual entrances are eliminated. It now bypasses many of the small towns that used to live off the travelers that stopped and used the services in town and former prosperous areas are the poorer for the relocation. The old road itself is a wonderful place to ride a scooter since it's lightly traveled and fairly scenic. I cruised well within the scooter's pace and was able to see the other side of things I normally only catch a glimpse of from the Interstate.
I've known about Ditiwigs General Store for years but it's only recently that I've actually seen the place. It serves the vacationers that stay up at Oquaga Lake a resort spot outside of town. The abandoned car dealer was a surprise since the building was in reasonably good shape even though the weeds were so deep. It reminds me of that History Channel series about the Earth after man. With a little lawn mowing it looks as though it could be serviceable again. Finally I got an up close view of Deer Lake, created by damming a creek. It was your usual vacation community with small cottages surrounding the lake. I could almost hear a pin drop even though the Interstate was virtually over my shoulder. I guess after Labor Day everybody goes home and the place is lightly used.
I turned around after that and headed home putting about twenty-five miles on the scoot. Despite the fact that the skies looked heavy and threatening I didn't get wet so it was a nice ride. I always enjoy a short day tour on the Milano, it feels so European.
Your average General Store in the quiet countryside.

Do you think this little fixer upper will make a good scooter shop?
