The Kymco People 250-S has an analogue speedo but a digital odometer in km's and mph. How does this work from an analogue speedo ??
also. since the odometer is digital, could you convert this digital mph value back to a digital mph speedo ??

The digital odometer works like a bicycle cyclocomputer. They have a little tiny magnet and a sensor, that counts the times the magnet passes the sensor. They already know how far the scooter will travel on a per tick basis, so they count the ticks and calculate the distance. A small micoprocessor displays the running tabulation on the little LCD display. To prevent it from forgeting, when you turn off power, the processor has a split second to detect the power loss and save the current result into flash memory which remembers even if power is off.
Yeah you can do it: Some speedos are digital, but they display in a analog fashion. I have some of the cool small three phase stepper motors they use in BMW and Mercedes Autos at home someplace. A stepper motor is unique in that you have to pulse power to the motor coils for a split second to get the motor to turn slightly in a step fashion. So you can pulse it once and it moves a few degrees, and so on.
