I recently bought a pair of Sears Die Hard black work boots. No steel toe and they look like military issue. Basic but comfortable. They had a special sale w/multiple discounts. Paid less than $40. Not up there with the best but they will do the job.

Basically as long as you have a nice durable material, like leather, cordura, etc. Covering you from toe to above your ankle bone, you should be good.
I've heard many stories about how much pavement likes to grind ankle bones into powder when unprotected...

No steel toe and they look like military issue. I would just emphasize that for a riding boot...no steel toe is a safety feature. A lot easier to fix a broken bone then a severed nerve. Under the wrong circumstances a steel toe boot will end up cutting your toes off.

The best boots I've ever worn for riding were Red Wing Boots. I wore out 2 pairs riding my Harleys.

Here is what I wear: Zcoil Desert Hiker... It's a hiking boot, with a hard orthotic(Have to have them or I can't walk).. They also have a large spring in the heel, makes it easier on the joints when I do walk.. Not exactly helpful for riding, but they protect the ankle and foot well with the high top and hard orthotics.. So, in that aspect, they are great for riding.. JimK

Though these are too nice to wear on a scoot, these can be had be had if you really look for deals. I got these on eBay for $10.50.
