Well in the end, it was not a waist of time going to court yesterday. The judge asked me if want to plea guilty, no contest or not guilty? I plead not guilty and luckily I was the last one to be called or I would have had to wait until everyone else had gone through their case and then the judge goes back to the people who plea not guilty and stand trial. I told the judge that I was riding in the right lane, because my GPS accidentally led me to route 28, not knowing it was a Highway and I was just wanted to get off ASAP. I mentioned that all the cars in the center and left lanes were driving much faster than I was, and the policeman had picked me because he wanted to know more about my scooter. I told here that his first question was not "license and registration please", but it was "hey, how much did you pay for your scooter man?". Very quickly the just dismissed the case and said I would only have to pay $5 for a court fee and told the officer: "I need to see you in my chambers, NOW!". That is what I wanted to hear and put a smile on my face. Great! I love stories with happy endings.

I went to my second court appearing this morning and was charged $5 for the speeding, $66 for the court fees and no point penalties. It was the same judge as the first court appearing. The best part of this, was that there was only 3 people in the court and it took only 7 min. from walking in and walking out.

Man..that's alot of money for fuel for the whole summer. It's suck to have pulled over and paid for cop's fuel. But it's better than paying more for insurance. I ride to work on highway at speed limit and no one has run over me yet.

Yesterday I went to my final court case for getting pulled over by a State Trooper for "speeding" doing 39mph in a 35mph road. This time, it was a different judge and as soon at I mentioned the words Motor Scooter, he had a grin on his face. He gave the State Trooper a look like "what the hell were you thinking?", and then apologized to me for waisting my time and said I was free to go. No speeding charges and no court cost charges. I wish I could have been there to hear what the Judge had to say to the State Trooper. ;D

Of course, maybe they're dating and it was an afternoon special... ;-)
good job in court there. I know if I got that ticket I'd go in, cause mine isn't doing 59 unless I push it off a cliff!

Ya, in this Missouri town, cops don't bother scooter riders, no matter how many miles over the speed limit they are doing. 59 mph was not fast enough to give a ticket over. Most cops will not pull over a car, unless it is doing 10 mph over the speed limit. Kids ride motorcycles in the streets of my town and cops never do anything. Even had a old man say to me, while on his 50cc scooter," Why the plate.. Cops will not bother you". My plate were not for these cops, but other counties and highway patrolman that see me doing 60 mph down the highway and pull me over to ask," What displacement is that scooter?..... license, registration and proof of insurance, sir"? But that is why I registered it. It is a MC-13-250 and State law requires it to be registered as a motorcycle. Full coverage insurance only cost $18 per month and protects against theft too. Worth having!

That's sweet that it ended like that. Here in Michigan you need to plate any mopeds above 50cc well when i went to the dmv they registered mine as a 50cc. On my way home i got pulled over just because its winter time here and he gave me a ticket for not having it plated. But anyways its going to get dropped I hope I didn't put the sticker on yet because its so cold here. Plus now with all the stuff I've done to it i wont get pulled over they wont catch me. hahaha

You plead guilty or go to trial. That's the only options.

The people in that case wold of been the officer who gave the ticket. He was there and all the info would of been on the ticket. That stuff happens all the time here in Michigan. So maybe you should go and spend some more time on court....

Real court, not tv court. Watched one a few minutes the other day (channel surfing), "judge" kept interrupting a girl that was trying to tell her story. The "judge" kept interjecting personal comments about the girl's upbringing and character. Totally illegal behaviour.

Since I wasn't there I can't say either way who's right or wrong. But go by the numbers. 39 in a 35 is 4 mph over the speed limit. That's 11%. Most speedometers are off by way more than that. Plus you can let your attention drift for a second and speed up 4 mph easily. I also don't know how the speed was taken, but the Courts are uncomfortable with radar on two wheeled vehicles since they present such a small "front". Maybe the Judge wasn't ready to see any of this take the Courts time or do something punitive like plead it down to a Parking Violation, something that happens everyday.

Speedo being off is not a defense to a charge of speeding
Courts do not dismiss on their own motion

I can believe some small town judges & cops doing this ...they seem to make their own rules as they go along I was ticketed for unsafe operation of my scooter (vino 125) when I has going 15mph in a 25 zone but it had more to do with the shapely 19 yr old young black college co-ed on the back of a 60+ white man's scooter ....thankfully I knew the magistrate who tossed the charge out when I showed up in court with 7 witnesses who had all heard the cop tell me I should watch whom I "associate with"

Well this did happen to my wife. She blew into a speed trap. 30mph doing 43mph. Left her wallet at home so she had no license, registration and we hadn't put the insurance cards in the car. The cop let her go home and get them, believe it or not. Night of her appearance she admits her guilt with a smile. Judge looks at 43 year old School Teacher and gives her Parking Ticket instead. No points, no penalty-nothing. She pays fine after seeing teenagers having the book thrown at them for like crimes.
