I noticed a lot of people (including me) want to see what safety gear works and what doesn't in an actual crash. If you had the unfortunate opportunity to "crash test" ANY type of gear (jacket, gloves, jeans, shorts, helmets, even skin), could you help us other dawgs out when you have some time? I'm looking to compile some info on how certain clothing or safety gear performs in a crash. Here's a simple format and thank you in advance. Note, if you post a road rash picture, please don't post anything really graphic as this is a "family-friendly" site. I don't want the moderators to be mad at me ;D
Crash Type: [Describe VERY briefly the crash.]
Shoes: [Type of footwear and injuries sustained on feet]
Gloves: [Type of handwear and injuries sustained to hands]
Jacket: [Type of upper-body-wear and injuries sustained to upper torso]
Pants: [Type of lower-body-wear and injuries sustained to lower body]
Helmet: [Style of helmet (FF,3/4,1/2), Model of helmet and injuries sustained to head]
Photograph: [Post photograph if available of gear or crash]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crash Type: "HUA Cager" - Left Turn Larry...40MPH
Shoes: High Top Sneakers...all toes severed on right foot...havested skin from leg to provide skin for foot, broken ankle and broken arch.
Gloves: None - Two fingers severed - forearm, wrist and all bones in hand broken.
Jacket: Jeans Jacket - Road Rash on back
Pants: Jeans - Road Rash on Legs - Crushed Knee - broken leg
Helmet: DOT - No head damage..completely conscious and lucid thru 12 hours of surgery.
Photograph: None
Crash Type: "Cornering" - Too fast and too slick on a 90 degree turn. 35mph or so landing on asphalt.
Shoes: Cheap low top sneakers. One shoe was lying in the road after the accident. Sprained foot.
Gloves: None. My hands were a little scraped up, but not too bad.
Jacket: None. Just a short sleeve t-shirt. No body damage.
Pants:Jeans. Ripped through on both knees and a little on one shin. One knee got a small patch of road rash, pretty deep. Over a year later you can still see it and the nerves there don't feel right. Other knee barely got anything. No rash on my shin, the jeans took all of that.
Helmet: None. Luckily, I never hit my head.
Photograph: None
Crash Type "Mechanical Failure" - Tire failure on a pocket bike. 30mph high side, onto asphalt.
Shoes - Cheap low top sneakers. No shoe or foot damage.
Gloves - None. My hands were a little scraped up, but not too bad.
Jacket - Leather biker jacket. No damage to the jacket. I landed on my shoulder and it was pretty sore for a while.
Pants - Jeans. No damage.
Helmet - None. Lucky again, I never hit my head.
Photograph: None
Crash Type: "Unstated Cause" - 30mph left side slide
Shoes: Asics running shoes - Gel Kayano XIV - no foot damage, toe section of leather worn down to the fabric
Gloves: None - slight sensitivity to the hands, would have had some damage if I hadn't though to flip up on the elbow.
Jacket: Joe Rocket Alter Ego in mesh configuration - ZERO damage to jacket, very mild roughing of left forearm underneath the armor plate, bruise to left shoulder under armor plate.
Pants: Cotton "scrubs". ripped a hole in the left leg. 2nd degree burns on both left and right knees. It's been 2 weeks tomorrow and I still have some pretty good scabs, although finally fresh skin around them.
Helmet: HJC modular, face down at impact. No head injuries, no scratches to helmet, I pretty much went down on all 4s and then rolled onto the jacket keeping the head off the ground.
Photograph: I have plenty at work, documenting the healing for kicks but nothing I'd post here.
