I picked up my armored jacket at the local B&M honda/suzuki shop and took a look at the motorcycle gloves while I was there. I was shocked to see $60 and $115 price tags on them.
Admittedly some of them looked like they would protect you quite well and also substitute for brass knuckles should you get into a fight, but my budget is a little lower than that.
How would a decent pair of Mechanix gloves work?
I was at Harbor Freight a couple weeks ago and saw they had some work gloves with plastic armor looking bits on the back of the fingers as well.
I already dropped $280 on the jacket, is this just one of those "costs of being safe" things?

a lot of people use mechanix gloves, atleast get something that resists heat and tearing. (roads tend to get hot when you're sliding on them ;D)

My B&M charged me less than $20 with tax for my bike gloves. I can't imagine mechanix gloves would hold together for more than a few feet at 50 MPH. The pants are what seem to kill me. They're expensive as heck.

I bought some Tour Master gloves from motorcyclesuperstore.com for $20. Really nice and quite a selection.

Tourmaster makes some good stuff. I have some Alpinstars gloves that I got for about $25. They are great, and have a dense foam padding over the main nuckles and some thinner pading overthe fingers, as well as mostly being made of leather.

Yep, if a place wants that much for a pair of gloves, take your business elsewhere! Better deals on good stuff can be had for the time spent searching the Web.

you can usually pick up some heavy duty leather gloves at your local hardware store for around 20 bucks. avoid suede at all costs.

Dean,
With respect to your reply to Leo; "Even DOT approved suede?". What a smartass reply and I'm laughing my fool head off because of it! Thanks for the chuckle!

The problem with gloves that just have elestic holding them on your hands is that they can easily come off in a crash. Buy gloves that use velcro, straps, etc to hold them on your hands.
And to Bravobravo: perforated or vented mesh gloves are actually cooler than no gloves, once you are moving. They also protect your hands from sun-heated parts.
While I don't always wear long sleeves, I always wear gloves. It would really suck not to be able to wipe the ol' backside after a nature call........ ;D

I found some gloves I like at the marine supply (West Marine) they are sail boat gloves, only the very end of the thumb and pointer finger is open. I can still do stuff with these gloves on and the palms are heavy leather made for working with ropes. ( I`m not a sail-boater) I catch them on sale for $10.00 and they last a long time. I don`t work for these people. I just like these gloves.

I'm using some padded utility gloves from Home Depot. They work great for this cold weather! Though, I doubt it will do much for protection in an accident
