So here is the deal. I currently have an 06 TBG which is in fantasic shape. I paid $800 for it and it had 3800 miles on the odo. There is a 01 Vino on ebay that is in my immediate area and the current bid is $860 (presently I am the high bidder, but the reserve price has not been met). I like the looks of the Vino, but I really don't need two scoots so I would probably need to sell the TBG. What do you think would be a good price for the Vino. Do you think it is a better scoot than my TGB. Oh, I should mention that it only has 400 miles on it. I am really on the fence on this one. John

I honestly don't know much about resale pricing of scoots, so I'd be guessing as much as you are there.
I will say that I would like to own a Yamaha scoot for the simple fact that parts are easier to get. I can easily drive to a few different Yamaha dealers, plus all the dealers with parts listings online. I would like to believe that a Yamaha would have a little better quality control than a lot of China and Taiwan made scoots. If you ever want service, I would think motorcylce mechanics in a Yamaha dealership would probably be above par to a lot of scooter shops. TGB is a good scoot though, and if you happen to have a good dealer the points I just made won't matter too much. I just don't have a good China/Taiwan scooter dealer closer than 1hr30mins from me but I think about 4-5 Yamaha dealers within 45min.

Vert, I share your thoughts. What is interesting is sources like kkb.com show the Vino with a trade-in price of $700+ and the retail at $1100, which interestingly is the same as my TGB which is 4 years newer. The problem is I doubt if you can buy the Vino for less than $1200, if that. The only dealer for my TGB is a marine dealer about 15 miles away. I wouldn't think they are experts on this particular engine but they probably understand 2 strokes in general. Unless I needed special tools to get bearings out or to pull something off the engine I would probably do most of the maintanence myself anyway. In the event I needed help I would likely just pull the engine and take it to a good mechanic along with the parts, assuming I can get them. I do think parts are available if just may take a while to get them.

There are pluses and minuses to both, but given the mileage on the TGB, a fewer-mileage-scoot like the Vino would save you rebuild time and money.
I'd like to know how many miles these little motors go before needing a rebuild.

Karl, I have wondered about motor life expectancy myself. If I had to guess I would think a well maintained non-modified quality two stroke motor could go 10,000 miles or more and then only need a top end job for a couple of hundred dollars. The owner of the TGB distributership told me he has heard of 30,000 miles which I have to believe is very much the exception. He should know because of warranty claims and parts orders from his dealers. The problem is very few people in the U.S. use them that much. Think about the miles they must put on them in China and places like that. The Vino might go longer without a rebuild, but it will probably cost several hundred more up front. Decisions, Decisions. Thanks for the input.

JTL,
WOW, 30k miles on a two stroke scoot? That rivals 4-strokes.
I don't think I'll ever wear out my scoots. I usually sell them and get something else before that.
Let us know what you decide. Both are great scoots so you can't go wrong either way.

Update. I snagged the low mileage 02 Vino on ebay for $1030. I'm going to pick it up today and I hope it is as advertised. I have gone from no scoots 30 days ago to two scoots today. Now my wife and I can ride together. John

Nice, now you've got someone to drag race at red lights and stop signs. Let us know who wins. *Disclaimer : Street racing is illegal.* lol

The Velo is hers and now she wants a pink and white Kymco 50....I forget what the new 2009 model is called. It has a dumb name that's not easy for me to remember. Update: Kymco "Sento". I mean, come on, what the hell is that? It's almost like "Vento" or "Sentra".

I picked up the Vino and it is like brand new, only 330 miles on an 02. I change all of the fluids. I think there may be restrictions. The spacer in the variator is easy enough to check and remove but if the exhaust is restricted I am not sure what I am looking for to remove or derestrict. Any ideas? John

I figured out how to derestrict this little scoot. What a difference! In a few days I am going to write a comparison of the TBG vs the Vino. My first impression is that the TBG is built about 2x stronger. John
