I took my wife's Velo for a spin the other day and noticed some smoke from the exhaust chamber when I was at a red light.
I looked even closer and the black paint was bubbling off and smoking. CRAP, I thought! Is it running too lean and really heating up the pipe? That was my first thought. I had checked the plug, but didn't do a plug chop, the day before and it was a beautiful coffee brown. So I wasn't that worried about it being lean.
I was running the scoot WOT for miles, too. It's a 50cc oil injected beauty of a 2stroke. God's gift to human kind. I was in the middle of nowhere and I wasn't experiencing any kind of engine issues, just the smoke from the paint burning off.
I bought this scoot used a few weeks ago. I think that the previous owner had tried to "spruce it up" by painting the exhaust, but I think that he used some non heat resistant paint on it.
I went to autozone today and got some header paint and some 'Peeler', paint removal stuff. It was getting later in the afternoon so I wanted to finish this project in one day. I took off the exhast and used the "Peeler" paint remover on it. It bubbled up pretty good on some spots but others were stubborn. I think those stubborn areas were the original paint. So, I hit it a few more times with the Peeler, waited while it did it's thing, then I scraped and wiped what I could. Not all the paint came off. That was fine with me because most did.
I sprayed brake parts cleanear all over the exhaust and that removed all the residue and such. It also dried it instantly.
They were out of black header paint so I got some battleship grey colored stuff instead. It kind of looks like grey primer. I probably should have primed it first but I was in a hurry. If this stuff doesn't work then I'll redo it when I have more time. It looks pretty good, though, and you can't really tell where the older paint was. The scoot is grey and seafoam green two-tone and the grey pipe matches it pretty well. I didn't take any pics but I'll try and take some tomorrow and post them.
