Does the spring at the drain plug where the screen filter is,serve any purpose other than holding the filter? possibly keeping tension on the drain nut? Is it really necessary? just wondering? would a magnetized plug work just as well? wildbill

It keeps the drain plug from coming loose, so you only have to snug it down and not tighten it up hard.
Since the drain plug is aluminum, one could drill and tap a hole in it for a magnetized bolt or something.
Oh yeah, it also keeps the mesh screen in place too.
