Hey Vince, I've got a Taiwan scoot but for China scoots, the Lance's seem to get pretty favorable reviews. If you're mostly around town, then a 50cc could work out fine. If you're talking 30 mile trip, then I assume you mean 45 mph or 55, so you'd need at least a 150cc depending. There are some rock solid brands if you can find them used like Honda, Yamaha; all the Japanese scoots. I personally like SYM as that's what I own, but I honestly believe for reliability, performance and the price they sell for, they are the best value out there right now.
And hey, welcome to the Dawg Pound! ;D

Hi Vince, I got a 150cc for about $1479 in Cal. I spent about $300 more on parts to make it more reliable. Mine is a "touring model"-bigger frame). I am happy so far but only have 200 miles on it. Anyone lives in my area I would be willing to show them mine if they like.
Good luck on your purchase, all cheap bikes seem kind of the same, but read through this forum before you buy, it will help you.

Hi Lance, I weigh 180 and have a 50cc 4 stroke. It doesn't do so well on hills..even around town. I bought a 150 this year..wouldn't take it on the interstate but otherwise just fine. Kymco has Taiwanese scooters in your price range Dealer Locater - www.strmotorsports.com/on_road.htmlLance has Chinese Scooters in your price range Dealer locater - www.strmotorsports.com/on_road.htmlSym is a good quality scooter, but to get something in the 150cc range the price is going to be more like $3,000. One can buy online..but you are pretty much taking on all the headaches that a bricks and mortar dealer would handle for you. Any vehicle, regardless of who makes it, is going to have minor problems straight from the factory.

Hi Lance, had to return to say my SUNL 150cc ignition coil failed a200.5 miles....lol, since I posted the earlier post here I had to return. After I replaced my coil, it ran great and I drove around town testing the new high output coil and 90000rpm CDI. Now I'm trying to see if it will be dependable or not, I'll get a spare regulator next.
SUNL appears to be for the risk-taker. It was the lowest price, I won't recommend it to you, although I am not surprised by any failure I have on here, considering the price. I will ride this thing as hard as I want and have fun too. If it fails too much I will get a better one to play with.
