They have more power, but burn more fuel.
Spark-plugs have to be changed rather frequently, or cleaned. (Because they burn oil on every stroke.)
They are 4x louder, and the noise is nearly constant. (Not put, put, put, put... more of a Waaaaaaaaa, waaaaaaaaaaa, waaaaaaaa.)
You have to mix oil/gas, or they may be auto-mix... but you need to purchase 2-stroke special oil to burn with the fuel. (Almost defeats any fuel savings you may get.)
They are twice as hot, since they burn 2x more than a 4-stroke.
They have things called "Reed valves", which require replacement from time to time. You will need to know where to get those for that model. (May use a standard part, but I am not 100% sure on that.)
Life-cycle of a 2-stroke is notably shorter. Twice the power-strokes equals twice the power wear.
May be illegal in some states, due to noise and/or exhaust pollution. (I thought they were all banned from sale in the US as of 2006. Guess not.)
I think that about sums it up...

They are more fun than a slower 4 stroke 50cc. With mods, the 150cc scoots won't keep up. That's all I needed to know lol.
They may wear faster, but even if they wear out 2x as fast, you are replacing substantially less than the 4 stroke. No cam, no intake/exhaust valves/springs/rockers etc... No valve adjustments obviously.
No engine oil to change, that's why you have to use 2 cycle oil in your gas.
The fuel economy is better with a 4 stroke, but don't think it's bad with a 2 stroke 50.
My opinion is this... -If you need the most fuel efficient scoot possible buy a 4 stroke. -If you want a faster scoot, stock or modified, buy a 2 stroke.

Just to toss in some facts; 1. The wifes Zuma has almost 5000 miles on it and I do inspect the plug every year, it is cleaner than some four strokes I have owned (VTX 1800) I do have a four year old new plug still in the box for when it goes. The thing runs and runs and runs, burns a QT of oil little over a Thousand miles, not bad for what it is. (stock form) 2. less parts turning, less parts to wear. 3. The cool factor in my book is high. 4. The exhaust noise has it's days but with the stock muffler I cannot hear it over my 150. But sometimes it's great to hear a tuned pipe on a two stroke scooter, the buzzing bee. The smoke could irritate some on a humid day but those can pass or go a different route.

The smoke could irritate some on a humid day but those can pass or go a different route. Use a good two stroke oil, like amsoil/blue marble etc..., and the smoke is pretty much gone.

A 2 stroke is just plain more fun. My Super 9 was new for 07, they didn't import in 06 due to emmissions and flooded the market in preparation of some new EPA requirements. My 07 had an exhaust system that included what appeared to be a "pair valve" where exhaust was reintroduced back to burn again. Needless to say it was also very restrictive, I gained 10+MPH just adding a performce pipe.
just a side note........ a high quality synthetic 2 stoke oil burns very clean, I have no noticable smoke coming out of my exhaust (4,000 miles so far) and it helps with preventing carbon build up. I use BelRay Si-7 fwiw.

Fixing to switch to Bel-Ray Si-7 as soon as my original Valvoline runs out. As far as fuel economy, my 2 stroke has been averaging around 95 mpg and I do mostly stop and go driving. I think when I get an unrestricted pipe it'll do better. Also, first two or three tanks were bad mileage, but now much better. Up to over 1100 km on the odo and it just gets stronger and stronger. Get up to 30 mph before I know it. I have lost some weight at the same time though.
