In cases where we need to see if the voltage is getting somewhere and don't have a meter handy, we could make a voltage tester using a light bulb with two wires connected to the bulb.
Connect one wire to a KNOWN GOOD (test it first) ground spot (best on the negative of the battery, but if not convenient, to the frame), test it by touching the other wire onto the positive of the battery and seeing the bulb light up.
Then touch the (positive side) wire to the spot where we hope the voltage is-(don't forget the switch and be VERY careful when testing with power on not to short out anything)!.

A homemade test light more than a meter, but good tip. I've got multimeters and test lights, but in a pinch I have used wire and a turn signal flasher (listen for or feel the clicks). For anyone not familiar with multimeters though, this is in no way a replacement for one. A multimeter will not only verify that there is some voltage present, but measure the amount. They also measure resistance, continuity, current, and other functions depending on the model. Very useful to have around, and can be had cheap in some bargain bins if you are on a tight budget.

take care not to burn yourself with hot bulb
sometimes it's a more convenient way to use the bulb because you just want to check a continuity and you have nothing to watch to see the result, just a light... in low luminosity working space or small space it's a must
but sure a good multimeter, when you know how to use it can be more usefull
