The starter's ground path runs through the engine case (just like the spark plug). The cable goes to the starter relay. Hope this helps.

so I hook up the negative from the battery to the engine (metal area) then the positive to the cable that comes off the starter? Thanks for your response

Not necessarily. I'm not sure if the starter relay on the 49cc engine you purchased is built into the starter or if it is a separate device. I know my Stella has a separate starter relay as does my Chinese GY6 scooter (just because I've never seen a starter with the relay built in doesn't mean they don't exist), but neither of those has a starter that looks like the picture attached to your post. If it is built in to the starter assembly there should be a connection for the wire from the starter switch on the starter housing in addition to the big cable from the starter itself. You may want to try to identify the manufacturer of the engine and look for diagrams online. Do you have a picture of the whole engine? What kind of scooter is it for?

lol...the Manufacturer is in China, and there is no way for me to get in contact with them...I talked to the place I bought it, and they weren't all too helpful other than saying that what I had told them I was going to try sounds "Good"...so I did try hooking it up the way I had explained above, and it works beautifully...granted I used too small of a gauge wires to connect the switch and they melted together in a flash...when I replaced them with 12 gauge its kicking ass now...starts like a beauty...

I know this conversation is really old now but I just thought I'd add something because it's almost impossible to find info on this. I have the same 49cc motor with electric start built in and there's no original ignition, wiring harness, lights, - just a pull start, and I wanted to hook up a key switch so I didn't have to pull start it all the time. After searching FOREVER I never found any info on exactly how to set it up. I finally got mine working so I just wanted to put this out there for anybody else who wants to do the same thing. You need a 12v 7amp sla battery, 12 gauge wire, A 2 wire key switch for 49cc atvs, motorcycles, etc, and a universal starter solenoid. All together I spent $40 bucks (I already had a 49cc with electric start built in = 1 wire coming out of the electric starter itself) and now I can start up my stand up scooter with a key instead of the pull start. It was nowhere near as expensive as some people were saying it would be and it was pretty simple to set up. Anyway hope this helps somebody looking to set up the electric start on their 49cc instead of having to use the pull start. All of the info I found was for people who had scooters and bikes that already had some sort of ignition already factory installed.
