Anyone know if there's any science behind what color might be most visible? Obviously a bright color, but red? yellow? green? Opinions?

You may want to think about getting the same color as the cops. When i am driving a car that is what I am scanning for - heheh

There was a Mustang around here some time ago that was neon green/yellow. It honestly hurt my eyes on a sunny day. That's the most visible color I have ever seen. My scoot used to be yellow, that worked pretty well for a stock color.

High visibility safety vests are orange and that yellow/green color.

I'm not sure what is the safest color, but I have found that opposing colors seem to stand out best. My scoot is red, and my neon green vest seems to be more visible on the red scoot than does the red with yellow stripes. Bob

The science of light will tell you that the color with the longest wavelength, that can be seen from the farthest distance by humans, is blue/violet. The other end of the spectrum is red/orange, with the shortest wavelength; a very vibrant color that can't be seen from as far. Most high-visibility gear tends to fall on the short-wavelength end of the spectrum, and is flourescent and reflective as well.
For on-the road visibility solid, bright colors seem to be the most noticeable. I ride a blue scoot and wear a bright yellow/black jacket. A white, or at least bright and solid colored helmet, also seems to be more visible than the helmets with busy graphics that act as camoflage.

Actually, the federal government has done quite a few studies on this as well as the sign industry. Yellow has always been found to be the most visible color to motorists. For this reason, you'll notice that most highway service vehicles, important signs, and traffic LED signs are all yellow. These have the greatest distance attention getting properties, while on the other hand, red, such as for a stop sign, has more limited properties and will only be reacted to at short distances.
There is an entire psychology behind what attracts a motorist's attention. I have an entire CD-ROM of documentation on this from the ISA (International Sign Association) since I am in the sign business.

You may want to think about getting the same color as the cops. When i am driving a car that is what I am scanning for - heheh I used to work as a car jockey, I would drive cars from one dealership to another because the mechanics worked in a different place than the service drive. Anyway, I have had the pleasure of driving many police cars, and let me tell you it is a completely different road when you are in a police car. People are polite, careful and will go out of their way to show that they are perfect drivers. So while you may be a little less visible with police colors than you are with neon green or yellow, people will most definitely give you plenty of space and courtesy if they think you are the fuzz. ;D Ride safe

Lucky us I have a degree in psychology and i remember my physiological studies well:
the most visible wavelength to the human eye is roughly 570 nanometers depending on the eye in question this will range from being seen as a pale yellow with an almost green tint, to almost orange. anything within that range of colors will be the most visible, and this is in fact why school buses are this color as well as many fire department and emergency vehicles. This particular photonic wavelength causes your cones to fire neurons in the fastest succession most quickly to whats called the V5 visual neural pathway (in lamens terms, this is where location/identification is located, and thus gets yoru attention quickly)
