Howdy. I live where it is very, very hot in the sun, and would love to be able to wear shorts while having some sort of knee protection. What I am wondering is: how much protection would those roadrace knee sliders provide? Would it be worth thirty bucks to have a pair of these to throw on with shorts? Does anyone else have any experience with these?
I realize that the rest of my leg would still be open to road rash, but a shattered knee seems worse, especially added to rr.

Do not ride without long pants. It may be hot but save yourself from serious injury and suffering if you have a crash. There are wonderful mesh/textile riding pants that will protect you with padding yet keep you cool. A better alternative, and much safer! Ride safe, Tom

Thanks for the reply. The more I've been thinking about this, the more I'm leaning towards riding pants. Sweating off a few pounds is much preferable to scraping 'em off; I'd rather re-hydrate than have to go through the skin grafts I've heard about.
My mesh jacket (J. Rocket Phoenix) is great, I'll probably look into the matching pants. It gets hotter every day that it's not raining. We're well into those days when the wind gets hotter the faster it blows, and even shorts are hot.
The more I think about it the more I think every, "ride safe," comes from experience! Thank you for your concern and your help. Dan

If you don't want to wear the motorcycling pants a good candidate is the special blue jeans they make, like "Draggin Jeans" for example. I wear a pair of Draggin Jeans myself, and I put in a pair of knee pads into them too.
I see people wearing little more than shorts and that is it, on their motorcycles and scooters. Even if you fell down at 5mph, you are going to regret that a lot. Makes me shudder.

earl is right. Hey those are great jeans too. I am trying to get a fit on them myself. Dan: good mesh pants and jackets will actually keep you pretty cool even in rather hot temps. That is how and why they are made. Good luck, Tom

I don't have riding pants and I have worn knee pads for longer rides and the one time I went down they saved me big time! I went off the road to come to a stop and rest a bit and the gravel was very loose so I lost it and my knee took a nice impact but I was not in one bit of pain when all was said and done.
