I recently purchased a TaoTao 50cc moped, and I believe I have been a bad owner. I missed the memo that I needed to take it easy for the 1st 100 miles or so, and now, at 117 km I believe I have a serious problem. While riding on the road at about 30 mph I heard a pop noise and the sound of the moped changed. When I stopped to check it out I was leaking oil pretty bad. I bought some oil and store and periodically added it on my way home to hopefully prevent any more damage. I opened up what I think is the gear box, because that's where the leak was coming from, and I found a destroyed half of a plastic ring loose inside with plastics bits everywhere. I have no idea what it is or where it is supposed to go. I looked on-line but couldn't find any information about this ring. Please help. What did I do to my new scooter? Thanks Zyntree Attachments:

Awesome. Thanks! Do you think I need to do any other maintenance besides cleaning out all the bits and replacing the part?

you need to know what caused it to break, its not normal for the fan to shred.

If the oil is coming from the area behind the variator you may have an out of balance issue which messed up the seal there. If that's the case I would return it to where you bought it so they can either replace the scooter it self, or at least the engine. Out of balance is a serious issue.
The out of balance would make the fan tear it self apart, then again the fan could have caused some out of balance when it broke which would also account for the seal breakage

I see. I'm hoping the fan caused the out of balance issue, if that's what it is. I bought the scooter off of craigs list with 27 km on it, so returning it isn't really an option. If the engine is out of balance, is there anything I can do about that personally?
Thanks for all the help btw. I don't think I would have ever figured this out on my own...
