Ohai I'm a new scooter owner living in Melbourne. It was interesting trying to convince people that it was a good idea, given that nobody in my family has ever driven a scooter/motorcycle ever and they really wanted me to get my driver's license. But given the cost of buying and maintaining even a second hand car ($10,000 + for any decent car) I decided to get my scooter learner's permit a few weeks ago and give it a shot I've been riding bicycles since I was about six years old so I thought that would help (which it sort of has...) Anyway, I'm now the proud owner of a Kymco Super 8 125cc after a lot of research and looking around. Although the only other scooter I've ever had experience with was a 4-stroke Honda Today 50 during my scooter lesson/license test, I've been very impressed with it. I'm here mainly to learn from other people and share my experiences, so I hope I've come to the right place!

Welcome Flipper, I have been in Sydney and Melbourne on business when I was working I am retired now. But get this Everytime I was in Melbourne and the Sales people took me around and out in the boonnies to get to a ferry I NEVER ONCE saw a KANGROO or a KOALA (HAHA).
One time we were going to the Ferry it was a SUNDAY I think, the sales person and his wife were showing me around . We were on a road with nothing around and it was HOTTER than the dickens. We pasted a sign that said next gas station 50 miles well next thing that happens is his FAN BELT BROKE. He pulls over and says I have some in the trunk!!! He said just about everybody carries belts because they break from the heat. So Here I am under the Car putting on a fan belt(HAHA).
I had business there with ANZ bank, loved the trollies great transportation loved the brick streets in downtown melbourne. And of course I had to bring back an OPAL to have a ring made for my wire(HAHA). Great place I loved it and the people were very friendly. Alleyoop

Alleyoop lol no I live in the city, so we don't get many kangaroos around here (mostly foxes, possums and flying foxes) You'd probably see some driving up the Pacific Highway from Melbourne to Sydney. There's a story of my grandfather driving in a combi from Melbourne to the Gold Coast when his fan belt broke too and he had to resort to using the elastic in his overalls, which managed to get them all the way there! The trams are great, especially for getting around the city. I live near the end of one of the suburban tram lines and it's really good for getting in and out of the city as well, even if 85% of the network is on-road That's why we call them trams and not 'light rail'. And as for the temperature, it's pretty hot now at the moment I remember Black Saturday in 2009 when it got to about 47-48 degrees Celcius (in the shade mind you) - that was unbearable... @shalomdawg ahaha no I don't have a roo guard - a lot of the 4-wheel drives do though.
