I was heading to the store to get creamcheese and whatnot, yesterday. I decided it was safe enough to ride the scooter because it hadn't snowed for two days and the roads had been salted a few times. So as I approached my destination I had one small turn to make where I drove right on top of a pile of snow and ice. In an instant my scooter had completely fallen out from under me and landed heavily on my ankle.
Now it was about this time that my brain had received the messages sent by nerves from my ankle and a rainbow of expletives flew from my mouth.
It was bad enough laying there in the road with a running scooter in horrible pain, but what happened next just made the day worth telling about; my cheap battery wouldn't electric start and my kickstarted jammed. I was stranded.
Luckily I had all the tools necessary to remove my cvt cover and unjam the kickstarter (and even more fortunately I had been able to remove the cvt cover at all thanks to the putty-knife-and-hammer trick I learned on this forum). So my foot hurt far too much to stand on, far too much, faaaaaaar too much. Because of this, I then proceeded to kickstart with my sprained/possibly-fractured foot -a double rainbow of expletives came from my mouth this time.
I was able to get the scooter home, the plastics are damaged a bit, but it ran okay. I now lay at home, unable to walk.
Now what can be done to my scooter to make sure this never happens again? How the hell do other people drive around on roads with bad conditions?

Thanks, Hank. I always make sure to wear my DOT helmet so none of my brain meats should get hurt , but not much will protect one against a sprained ankle.

Slow down--- and ALWAYS accelerate slowly. Never lean very much(if at all) in winter-like conditions---slow down before an upcoming turn. Barely turn the wheel when turning from a dead stop. Balance is the key, IMO, and no sharp movements when steering. I will, if I feel necessary, have my feet down. Be very cautious, unless absolutely necessary, about using the front brake. If you are turning left, you'll probably fall to the left--- and vice versa. Also, be cautious when riding on unbalanced roads--- especially country roads, when riding on the extreme right side of the road.
Take side roads, if possible, if you feel "rushed" or unsafe (to others not just you) on the 35mph roads.
I've had my share of winter riding.

Thanks for the tip, Hank. I'm definitely done wearing tennisshoes when riding around. Getting a pair of riding boots hadn't even occurred to me. I s'pose it's time to get a pair. Thanks for the tips. I seem to have some problem with my bike where I have to constantly rev it just to maintain a speed and that is a big part of the problem where I fell. The backroads are what caused the problem because they weren't salted or shoveled as well as the main roads. Sadly I can't get my scooter up to 35mph in order to take the main roads. I'm waiting for my new cvt belt and feeler gauges in order to replace the drive belt and possibly adjust my valves. There's nothing that will get me to stop riding in the winter because I have no other means of transportation; as such your advice is invaluable to me.

With my experience from bikes; when the road feels kind of slippery, I'm very careful with the throttle, don't accelerate too fast, don't go to fast (usually at a walking pace), and leave my legs hovering over the street (don't keep them on the floor board!). That way, if the scooter does fall, I'll catch it early with my leg, and possibly rebounce it.
If I can't rebounce it, but am sliding, then at least: 1- The scooter won't fall on my leg 2- I possibly could hold the scooter in an awkward angled position between my legs, with 1 foot on the ground, and 2 wheels, trying to balance it, until I come to a stand still.
On a bicycle it's easier to feel the road than on a scooter. On a straight line you can go faster than in a curve. Making U-turns on ice, you should do only very very slowly!
If it looks like there's too much icy roads ahead, don't take the risk, and walk; or if with a scooter, just scoot at 2-5MPH, and use your legs to balance or propel the scooter a little.

sucks i laid mine down in a gas station parking lot awhile back they had just sprayed the lot with water turned in and went down, several people where there no one even asked if i was ok, scratched up the scoot gave me a reason to paint so it all worked out. I only had some minor scrapes
