I was going to sit my Basic Handling Test to gain confidence on my scooter anyway, so I figured I may as well go all out and get my Class 6 L's (Motorcycle license).
I booked my test for Monday. I have to ride a proper MC - they do scooter courses, but its really just for beginners and now I want to get my MC license, so I have to ride an MC.
I just happened to be looking through Trade me (think Craigslist/Ebay) And I was looking through motorcycles. There was one which seemed okay, it was a 1988 Yamaha FZR250. So I called the guy and asked to look at it.
Had a look. Forks fine, new rubber, chain, ran like a dream. The plastics were damaged but this is why it was cheaper and he did say so in the auction. The guy was kinda like me, started off on a scooter, he even had the same scooter! Yamaha Jog. He got his L's then bought this bike and was now wanting to upgrade.
He let me sit on the bike, which wasn't intimidating as I thought it would be.
He let me start it and ride it on the flat. Clutch was easy. I was thinking this would be really hard but its not. I didn't stall, I admit I wasn't fluid with clutch control but for my first time ever, I think I did more than okay. Even just easing the clutch, applying throttle and doing that over and over again gave me such a rush.
So I ended up buying it for $1400, which is pretty good. I paid more for my scoot lol! Its all legal and I get it Friday. I'm pretty excited about it. Keeping the scoot, my sister is starting to ride it now and I can't/won't ride the bike until I am licensed.

We don't get the same models in the U.S. I don't think they offered an FZR in a 250cc size here. Most people think if it's not 750cc's it's no good. BUT things are changing, the Ninja 250 has become very popular and Honda is now offering us a CBR 250!! To keep up with that, Kawasaki is countering the CBR with the Ninja 300! I've read U.K. cycle mags that feature different models and displacements than what we see here.

I do like the Ninja's. Every learner here seems to start off with one, usually a 250 and almost always in green (its a great color). We have a lams restriction on what bikes you can ride, it used to be 250cc and under. Now it can be up to 600cc, but it depends on power to weight ratio. Honda makes some fantastic bikes too, the hold their price - an MC22 CBR250 needing work usually sells for more than $2k.
