I have a 50cc Motorino Supremo scooter from Valleyscooters
it has about 1100 miles on it.
This is my GF's form of transportation and today I had to have it towed home.
She said about 3 days ago the scooter was hard to start. She said hitting the E-start for a few seconds then kicking it would fire it up.
Tonight I checked all I could think of. Fuel is going to carb, I can drain fuel from the bottom as well through the hose. I checked all electrical connections still no fire.
When I kick the starter it honestly does not seem to have much resistance at all. I am scared to say no compression but it was very minimal compression on the upstroke.
I was unable to lay the plug out and check for spark and I am unable to check valves yet.
I pulled the plug out tonight though to check its color. The plug is damp not soaked and black.
I have never adjusted the valves on this engine before. Is it possible the valves are open and its loosing compression that way?
That could explain the black plug. The GF also told me it doesn't have as much power as her last scooter had either. Even though they both use the same engines.
My hope is that the valves are just out of whack causing low compression issues and that fouled up the plug.
What are the odds the valves are the culprit. What are the odds something like a headgasket is shot?
Please any help or advice is welcomed.

So I went outside tonight to check for spark
I got the plug to spark like 2 little sparks and nothing else. I tried grounding it on the exhaust pipe, engine valve cover, frame of bike etc..
It never sparked again. Plug tests good on ohm meter.
Next is to check Ignition coil and CDI. I will check for a good current from the stator as well. Any ideas on anything else guys?
Also I put my finger over the plug hole and it had enough compression to pop my finger off the hole etc.

I think if you do the electrical check as you described above...and check your valve lash...you will have found your own solution...

Ok so here is the results
60+ AC coming from Stator to CDI Killswitch puts out about 3v to the CDI when in run position
but none of the other wires FROM the CDI put anything out like 0.03 from each wire output. I know one of those wires goes to the ignition coil and no way 0.03v AC can fire a spark plug
Id say bad CDI

Ok I adjusted the valves - they were tight. I ordered a new CDI, Ignition Coil and Plug from Scrappydog www.scrappydogscooters.comDescription Unit price Qty Amount gy6 racing cdi (pigtail) $24.95 USD 1 $24.95 USD red hot performance coil $24.95 USD 1 $24.95 USD CR7 Iridium spark plug $9.95 USD 1 $9.95 USD hopefully this will fix her up. In January I will have a full garage back in place to work in and I will probably pull the backend apart and put a 72cc kit on this for her.

Ok so im lost now.....
I installed the new CDI and the iridium plug. All was going good the scooter started but the valves were making such a bad racket at .004 I tore it down and set them back to .003.
I re-assembled and now its dead again.
It will not start at all with just the kick starter. The battery was weak from sitting for the past 4 days without running and from previous attempt to start it using e-starter.
it should have started even without a battery by kicking it.
I seem to have lost the spark again. I sat it out on the valve cover and kicked it a few times and no spark. I tried the old coil and new coil both don't spark now. Is it possible something is frying the CDI's?
I am fairly sure the stator is good Stator put out over 30vAC to the CDI and the trigger was hitting at like 003vAC
plus it ran tonight it was just noisy as hell
any ideas?
I am lost I keep thinking a newly charged battery will help out but I know thats bs because these guys can run with a dead battery. So I am lost

UPDATE I don't totally understand it but I put the battery back on after a good charging and she fired up. I unhooked the battery while it was running to put it down into the battery holder and of course it stayed running. I don't understand why the kick starter couldn't turn it over and spark but the e-start did. I had it running for quite some time tonight and took it around the neighborhood a good few times and got the motor nice and hot. The scooter was bogging down bad if you flicked the throttle like it flooded out. So I adjusted the carb and that seems to have fixed that. Please listen to the valves is it normal to run with them this noisy? Intake and exhaust are set to .003 I set my valves by adjusting the tappet right down onto the feeler guage and making it so there is just a bit of drag when pulling the guage back and fourth. So both intake and exhaust are set this way to .003in (.004 was WAY louder) Video URL with seat off recording right at the motor just after firing it up www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmIAoZZ5xCcVideo with engine hot and seat on after riding around the area and adjusting the carbs www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTAASmFxkckVideo of girlfriend coming up the road and pulling into the driveway www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuysRvJjYPQAny hints, tips, advice please share it.

Does sound a little loud - maybe bring them down to .002? Did the GF notice any power improvement at .004 or .003?

check for vibration from the exaust pipe and muffler at .003 you might hear a little ticking . Check the muffler mounts and exaust pipe see if you can isolate the vibration . The noise could be a broken valve spring (thats hard to see ) . Post your results of loose vibrating exaust . Leave the valves for the moment .

she said it was more stable and ran good. It just sounded like crap.
before I adjusted the valves there was no noise issues. They are at .003 right now and she is driving it to work today. So I hope its ok with that much tapping to take it to work.
I cannot tear it down again until tomorrow. I am thinking of taking them down to .002. At TDC I can freely move the tappets up and down and feel some play in them. I assume thats normal since at TDC they are both open.
Aside from the CDI going out the engine has never given us issues at all.

At TDC I can freely move the tappets up and down and feel some play in them. I assume thats normal since at TDC they are both open. Aside from the CDI going out the engine has never given us issues at all. A slight tapping is normal for this Honda clone engine...just the nature of the beast...unlike our cars it does not have hydraulic lifters that compensate automatically for valve lash. Scoots have mechanical valve components. Back in the 70's we did not have hydraulic lifters except for on a few cars. To set them...we had to remove the valve covers...start the engine...sit in the engine and adjust all 16 rocker arms until we had a faint and barely audible valve tap. So when the valve tap got a bit louder...we knew we were getting low on oil..or they needed reset...sometimes reset as often as every 3,000 miles. So what you have is not as bad as you think..it is normal. If valve tap annoys you..never buy a 70's Dodge with a 225 slant 6...or 318 V8..as well as a Mustang with a 302 or 351 engine...

I still think after reading and reviewing some information I think I will drop the her valves down to .002in
I know her last scooter was a gy6 139qmb I sat it at .002in and it ran fine.
Hers now wont start unless giving it a bit of throttle and tonight she started it and let it idle by itself and it just slowly died out. I might have leaned it out a bit to much when I adjusted the carb.
IDK I will bring the valves down to .002 and I will let it get nice and hot and adjust the carb again.
any more ideas or tips
