Hi. First of all let me just say that I'm new to the forum and I hope I can make it a habit of coming here in my times of need. My name's Tyren and I own a blue TaoTao 50.
I use this scooter for a lot of general transportation as well as my job. (I do a paper route) I love using this thing to get around, it zooms along the road on any flat surfaces and it was money well spent...Until today. I was near the end of my paper route (I deliver around 200 papers a day) and all of a sudden I realized that my speedometer and odometer weren't moving!
I started to freak out wondering what could have went wrong, but I just can't figure it out. I've read online that these cheap scooter's wiring can become loose from vibration, which could be the cause of such a problem. When I got home, I took off the faceplate and checked all of the wiring, I could not find a single loose wire!
What are the possible causes of this happening? Is there a cheap way to fix this without it digging into my wallet? I really need to tell how many miles this thing has as well as how fast I am moving.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I can post pictures if needed. Thanks.

Check the speedometer cable. Make sure it hasn't come loose from the front wheel or where it attaches behind the speedometer housing. Sometimes they unscrew themselves with the vibration.

I took a look at the cable after I wrote this post, and, well, the cable snapped. I ordered a new one online an I am currently awaiting the delivery. I wish I didn't have to spend money to fix this, (about $25) but it has to get done. How can I prevent this thing from snapping again?

Yeah, it could have been worse, must have been a faulty design. Well, what can I do to prevent this again?

Keep the cable on the new one well greased, bearing grease will do fine, I bought a big tube of it at AutoZone for 2.95, it says it's for japanese bearings, cables an ect. It's called Coastal High temp grease for europeean & japanese vehicles.
