I just purchased a new powermax 150 ... Filled it up with gas... runs great for awhile then cuts out after a few miles as if no gas is getting through. Called the dealer, they said that my gas tank is to sealed tight and to make two paper punch holes north and south in the gas cap gasket seal to let it breath. I did this but not to the extreme of a paper punch... Is this normal? Still Fail.. The little milky clear fuel filter has an air bubble int it. Is that normal? So it cuts out, I pull over and open the gas cap... hit the throttle a few times over a course of minutes and then she starts up eventually 5-10 minutes later. Not sure how to remedy this to ride with confidence. Any help would be great Attachments:

Some TaoTaos came with the fuel filter on backwards . You can get a replacement filter for as little as 3 dollars . Fuel lines and vacuum lines from China are crap replace both with automotive 3/16 fuel line from any auto parts store . Only use premium gas . Have the valve clearances checked as if out of specs it will not run correctly . Make sure sparkplug cap is on tight . If it has a Torch brand of sparkplug ( junk) replace with a NGK iridium which fires so much better will help keep it running at its best . Do a plugchop to see if its running too lean , if so the sparkplug tip will be whiteish in color instead of caramel like it should be . Some have the air/fuel screw covered up and would need to drill the cover off or install a larger jet in the carb in order to get a sip more of gas

its a low compression engine, regular fuel will be fine, also check the hose the runs to the vacuum petcock, it may be collapsing on itself if you didnt bother to replace it with a quality hose of the correct diameter.
run it with out the gas cap if replacing the rubber hose fails to fix the problem, it may be a siphon/ venting problem where the tank actually is sealed to tight and the gas leaving isnt replaced by air coming into the tank, thus creating a vacuum, and not being able to flow.
if that is the cause dont go around punching holes in the tank, we will get you fixed up.

Is the direction of flow indicated on the fuel filter? If not, how would I know the correct way?
I will check for collapsing hoses and replace with 3/16.
Taking out the hoses as being the problem and if its possibly a siphon/venting problem.. what would fix that problem?

Your filter is on backwards, the big end goes toward the carb and it is marked with a flow direction arrow.
Make sure the vac line isn't pinched or kinked, and check all the clamps, you likely are missing a few, so pull out the seat bucket and check everything out.
I just got my Taotao running to 100 kilometers and hour, but then the cops shot out my tires.

Fuel Filter was backwards... I changed the filter out along with some good hoses and NGK spark plug
Thanks
Now looking for my air/fuel mix screw on the carb. Can't seem to find it. After looking at diagrams where is should be... its just a flat brass surface without a slot for adjusting. Looks like it was meant to have screw there unless my carb is a cheapo

the brass plate is an anti adjustment thing. the come into the US pluged so that they will meet smog, you can remove the plug and adjust it.

My 150 is running very nice...
I'm installing a 12 volt outlet this week. Think I'm going with the boat/marine style that is all over the internet for a nice clean look.
Anyone know of a good external phone holder?
What is the best way to ramp up the power without hitting it hard in the pocket book. My first guess is ( Larger Jets , Air filter change-out and pipe)?

Yes... spray can bedliner style. I like rugged feel. Finish came out great. I would have preferred to spray it with Linex professionally but given cost and how some parts would have to fit together properly for the thickness of the spray would be difficult if not masked.

Yep, I've seen this a couple of times before. When it dies, take the gas cap off. if there is pressure your problem exist in the overflow valve not the fuel filter. The fix: Remove Inner trunk,(two bolts and a couple screws) Locate the overflow vent tube on the top of the tank, follow it to what appears to be a filter, it is actually a ball actuated valve that is installed upside down. Flip it over so that the dirrectional arrow is on top. Re assemble. What is happening is pressure is building up in the tank, and because it cant release it his forcing fuel into the carb via hydraulic pressure. the result is a flooding of the engine.

iamjustjeff, I had the exact thing happen to my new powermax 150. When it came it would rund then die. I would take the cap off and hear a whoosh of the vaccume. It must be a common problem
