Hi guys, I got a 2004 yamaha vino 50cc 2 stroke scooter. I bought it online about 6 weeks ago to fix up since the previous owner said he was fed up with it. He had put in a new battery and starter, cleaned the carb, and got it running well, except he never got the electric start to work (it only started with kick start). And then he said it just quit running on him one day and so he sold it to me. I like to tinker with scooters for fun, kind of my hobby (been doing basic repairs on them for a few years such as carb cleanings, spark plug changes, real basic stuff).
Anyways, I was busy, so I didn't get to work on it till a few days ago, so it had been sitting for 6 weeks now. I went to start it and it kind of sputtered and sounded like it would want to start (got me really excited actually, it was a good sign). I poured in fresh gasoline, checked the 2 cycle oil and added some more, put in about 10mls of gear oil but didn't drain the old (I was in a rush), and it started but would only stay running with throttle. I then adjusted the "idle screw" (the screw on the carb that controls the gas mixture, I think that's what the screw is called) and it purred. Ran great. The turn signals would only stay solid instead of blink, so I recharged the battery since it had been sitting for a while, and then the blinkers worked perfect. I drove it about 5 miles a few days ago, and then drove it another 10 miles the other day. All the essentials worked on it besides the electric start and speedometer. The reason I actually repaired it all of the sudden after it sitting in my apartment for 6 weeks was because my buddy needed a form of transportation to go to work and he was in a bind, so I gave it to him for the same price I paid for it because he's done me a few favors in the past too.
Anyways, 3 days of him driving it and it won't start now. He said it ran great and all, but one day he was driving it down a main road and he just heard a "bump" and it kind of just died down. He had also hit a pole the other day going slow and dropped it and cracked some of the plastics, but he said he just picked it right back up and it rode fine that day. It was the next day that it just died on him when he was going down a straight road.
I went over to his place today to try to get it going again and couldn't do it. It has gasoline in the tank, it has oil, I checked the spark plug to see if it was getting spark and it was. The motor still turns over with the kick start. The scooter's speedo is broken but says it has 9581 miles on it, so I was worried that maybe the engine lost compression from being old, but I am inclined to say that isn't the problem... just a worry of mine. I was also worried that maybe it has an engine flooding problem. Because after it sat for 6 weeks, it basically started okay after I adjusted the idle screw. So maybe the extra gasoline in the cylinder evaporated over time. And maybe it has been running too rich and flooding the engine over time? I dunno, just thinking out loud.
Currently, it has the spark plug BPR7HS. What do you guys think the problem is? I am going to go back over there in the next day or two to get it running for him since he actually needs it. My plan of action is this:
1)Change the spark plug even though it is getting a blue spark. Any suggestions for a model number I should get? It currently has a BPR7HS
2)Clean the carburetor even though the previous owner said he cleaned it. The scooter doesn't seem to have a fuel filter on it and the tank is not super rusty, but it is a tad rusty, so I was thinking that maybe the carb got clogged.
3)Put in clear fuel lines so I can see the fuel flow.
4)Check to see if the engine is flooding... but I don't really know how to check this and what defines a "flooded engine" vs a "normal non-flooded engine"
But that is really all I got, I'm not used to doing anything besides really cleaning carbs and changing spark plugs. What do you guys think is the problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks so much, sorry for the long post, was trying to be thorough so you guys have all the information I have. Take care, I appreciate any advice.
Oh, I forgot to mention, the scooter is probably derestricted since it is hitting the high 30s to maybe even low 40mph range, at least based on how it feels. I've driven several scooters before, and this vino is pretty quick off the line and has a respectable top speed. Didn't know if that would help diagnose any problems. Thanks again
