Skip down to ++ if you dont wanna read the story.
Couple of month ago i crashed someone elses scooter ( Jmstar sunny 50 ). I was being a idoit and driving down the foot path, thought i could kick a wheelie bin over and keep riding ... i was wrong. i lost control felt like speed wobbles and i ended up in a side way slide. I rode the scooter back to his house seemed to work the same as before ( i used the kick start to get it going. Worked first time no stutter or anything.)
From my inspection: mirrors where smashed out. ( bought new ones ) lower panel came off and the pastic around the eletric start was smashed.
Just got the quote for the repairs. And it looks quite hefty for what happened.
Carburettor ( missing from bike) $118.50 lower r/h pannel $87.50 Labour 2 hours @ 70$ p/h $140 Engine oil $14.75 i dont have to pay for that....
total $414 gst inclusive. all NZD ( 316 USD )
++ skip to here ++ My Question is: Do you need a carburettor for a scooter to work ? and how much labor would be involved installing one ?
Thanks for your expertise.

Thanks for your expertise. First off, $118 for a Chinese carb... i don't think so. Go here. its $40 www.scrappydogscooters.com/Replacement_Parts.htmlThe bike will not run without a Carb. It supply's the fuel. Without one it will not start. You must have really messed up the bike to have damaged the carb. You do know what it looks like right? Looks similar to this

There are more than a few parts places for Chinese scooters. You will need to look below the seat on the left side of engine casing for stamped # like 139QMB or silmilar..this will tell you what parts you will need for your scooter. Shop around for prices. You will be surprised at the different mark-ups.. just google GY6 50cc parts..there are several parts dealers who are advertised on this forum who will discount you as a scootdawg member..LOL....

Thanks heaps you just saved me 200 bucks =) The worst you could have done would be break a couple panels and such, all body stuff, to get the carb damaged just by laying it on its side.. well thats almost impossible. Also I dont see why you would need to buy engine oil, since its a sealed system.

Your post says they stated that the carb was missing from the bike in the quote... If that were true, you would not have been able to ride it anywhere after the drop, and I'm pretty sure you would have noticed a piece of metal, about the size of a softball, with tubes and such coming out of it fell off, as well as a huge gas leak, and no throttle. No scoot will run without a carb, it is where the air is mixed with fuel before going into the engine.

I would not trust the people that told you that there is no carb on it and would take it somewhere else. They are crooks and greedy and are taking advantage of you. Lefty

Next thing you know they'll be claiming the muffler bearings fell out in the crash and you bent the johnson rod.

The bike will not run without a carb so if you lost it you would not have been able to kick start it and ride it anywhere.
This mechanic is running a scam on you and should be avoided.
Hopefully they did not already remove the carb from the bike so they could sell it back to you.
I also did not see anything related to fixing the starter switch housing - is this still in need of repair?

Of course if you wrecked your friends bike, you are obligated to repair it to it's previous condition but the shop that is fixing it is screwing you and your friend (hopefully friend is not part of the scam). Labor cost looks about right but carburetors are dirt cheap.

don't forget to tell them to check the turn signal fluid as well.
they are ripping you off and disrespecting you by basically saying you or your friend are ignorant.
go somewhere else definitely.
