Hi there, I recently purchased a BTM Baotion 50cc 4 stroke which would cut out on full throttle, well, it would lose power and I would have to decrease the throttle and open it up to keep going. I found the air filter was missing so I started thinking about vacumn and went and ordered one, the guy in the shop here in Sweden said it would be noting to do with that, it would be down to the valves as the scoot has nearly 3000kms on the clock and suggested that I put it in for a service where this would be adjusted along with new spark plug and oil change etc, this would cost me 850 swedish krona which is about 73 pounds or 120 dollars. Firstly could this be the problem, I don't trust mechanics, especially when I am a non native to Sweden and is the service something I could do myself with adjusting the valves etc (I am quite handy!) if so, how do you adjust the valves? Thanks.

1) The missing air filter absolutely WOULD have something to do with that. Whenever you modify the peak air flow, you have to adjust the jetting accordingly. Assuming the carb still has the stock jet, simply putting in a new air filter might be enough to solve the problem. 2) Valve adjustments are no harder than changing the oil. If you can do one, you can do the other. I'll assume you know how to do an oil change. 15w-40 is spec, but most of us have no trouble using 10w-40. Assuming you have a 139QMB engine, the capacity is 24 oz. Valve adjusting: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSL3dhg96m4$120 USD is ludicrous. About half that would be acceptable for both jobs, since the entire procedure takes under an hour.

D Cat is correct, an hours labor is about right, since most shops have an hour minimum charge. Getting the plastic out of the way is more trouble than doing the valve adjustment.

Too true, a valve adjustment shouldn't take more than 15 min. if you know what your doing. My first one took about 30 because I was in unknown territory. Oil change should take 5 min., and spark plug shouldn't take no longer than 2 or 3 min. My spark plug came pre-gapped, though I checked it just to be certain.

Cheers folks, I didn't think it would be a big job. The scoot engine is new to me only having had two stroke engines in the past (no valves) I just wanted to make sure I was taking on a massive job, obviously oil change change and spark plug were not unknown to me. As for the cost of the service, this is Sweden, even a loaf of bread costs about 3 dollars, surprisingly cigarettes are about half the price that they are in the UK, not much bloody use to me, I don't smoke!!! I will take a look at the youtube video now. Thank you again.
