Hey guys. Oldish member here with a new problem. I took a long ride down PCH here in Orange County the other day, and about 1/2 way through the trip, I noticed this loud metal rattling sound when ever I gave it a lot of throttle. If I babied it, it was fine. I thought maybe the exhaust was loose, but that wasn't it.
Also it's been leaking oil a lot, but the oil level seems to be staying the same. This is all occuring after an oil change.
I do have high miles and I think the little balls in the transmission, the 4 which make up the VST thing? I have the terms wrong I know. The 4 bearings need to be replaced, could that be the grinding?
One more thing, it also whines upon engine breaking now. Never did that before.
Thanks for any advise or help you can offer.

Did you gas up before this started? If you put in low ocatane (mislabeled?) gas, it will ping like a bastard, which is a rattling sound. I remember cars doing that years ago with no-name brands of gas. Today, with EFI, the computer can retard/advance the spark to deal with octane issues, so you don't hear that so much.

My guess is the transmission balls but it could be the gas or exhaust heat shield. I use Sonoco 100% gas in my 150 Q-Link.

I always put premium in. The sounds is loudest on the left side, not the exhaust side, so it's not the shield.

Maybe check your clutch bell for play...

What really helps in these situations is a video with audio so that we can actually hear the sound. If you could do that, it increases the chance we will accurately diagnose the problem. Otherwise its allot of it could be this or that. If your scooter has allot of miles on it and its not maintained on regular bases its time to start looking at things like variator weights and belts.

check your baffles in the exhaust maybe they rusted out and when u accelerate they rattle, sometimes this sounds like it comes from the cvt side

The video problem is a little hard, but I should be able to get one saturday afternoon. Thanks everyone! I do the oil regularly, but the variator weights are neglected, so that was my first thought. Thanks everyone, I'll report back tomorrow evening.

Hi 4X4mecca, I would take the CVT cover off and rev it up on the stand and see if you can pinpoint were the rattling is coming from. Like you said it could just be your roller weights, once the wear out they do a lot of rattling. What i use is a mechanics listening device looks like one of those hearing things the doctors use except this you attach a long rod at the end. Then plug it in yours ears and you can go and touch all over the engine and you will pinpoint were the noise is coming from. Alleyoop

But it is loud METAL rattling. That is probably not the rollers. Could be lots of stuff. Bell housing could be loose. If there is a kick start, that could be slightly engaged. Springs might be shot on the center stand. Check your airbox screws and your CVT cover screws. My airbox was loose and rattling (but not metallic).

Well it also could be the Variator nut loosened up and the Variator fan is banging on the cvt cover thats a nasty metal to metal rattleing. But the thing to do is take the CVT cover off and I am sure if its anything under the cvt cover, kick starter parts, Fan etcc.. it will be seen and noticed. If its not then its a more serious problem. Alleyoop

I had this problem before. I didnt have enough gear oil in my final gears and I ended blowing out a rear bearing.
The only way I could describe it was like someone removed my tire, put a small crescent wrench inside the tire, and re-inflated it.
Low speeds, no problem... Noise increased with the rotation of the rear tire.
When the bearings were removed and inspected, they were so worn down that they felt like someone poured sand in 'em.
Do you think that leaking oil is gear oil and you ran your final gears dry?
