Just wondering how often this needs to be cleaned. With how dirty my oils were after only 300 miles, it made me wonder if air filter will be filthy as well. I did spray it with K&N filter oil during PDI. Also, how does it get cleaned? Vacuum it, soap and water? Thanks.

My scoot says ever 1000 miles but I'm going to clean every 500 miles. I also sprayed my foam filter with the the K & N oil.......the kit I bought came with a can of cleaner.......you can probably get the cleaner for auto parts store.

i clean my uni filter with gas. i suppose kerosene or a mixture of gas and oil would work too.
the last time i had my filter off i didn't have the special oil for it so i sat at the curb and doused it with 10W-40 engine oil. when i squeezed out the excess it was black. so i suppose you could use regular engine oil to clean it in a pinch.

The air filter on the Linhai design engine does not seem to get dirty very quickly - unless you ride on dirt roads a lot. At 1K miles, mine was still pretty clean. They may be oiled from the factory. You can wash them out in warm soapy water. Blot and air dry. When using filter oil, spray a light coating and blot dry with paper towels. Too much oil is not good. I will clean the filter again at 3K miles and if if still isn't too dirty, my plan is to service the air filter every 3K miles, when I change the gear oil and do a CVT/belt inspection. We can get a little paranoid about frequency of service on these things!

On the Linhai clone engines I have seen, the thin foam filter is not oiled. So you need to oil it up using some air filter oil (not motor oil). Without air filter oil, you might as well throw away the foam filter as it is useless then.
You can go several thousand miles on a decent foam filter that has been oiled. Cleaning it more often if you ride in dusty dirt road areas.

As I said, I did use K&N filter oil on it. I live Vegas, very dusty out here. I have about 400 mi on scoot. Is every 1K miles alright, or would that be too long considering my environment?

After you check it a few times at varying intervals, you will find the service interval that is right for your riding conditions.
